Lambros Siderides Obituary

LAMBROS ELIAS SIDERIDES, M.D., beloved husband, father and grandfather and devoted physician to three generations of patients in the community, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones on June 7, 2010 after a long illness. He was 82 years old. Dr. Siderides was born on May 27, 1928 in Constantinople, Turkey to Elias and Marika Siderides. He graduated from the Medical School of the National University of Athens in Greece in 1952 and arrived in the United States on Thanksgiving Day that same year. After a general internship at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, NJ, he continued his residency in Internal Medicine and Non-Invasive Cardiology at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, NJ in 1958. He completed his training at a fellowship in experimental cardiology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, working under the cardiac surgeon, Dr. Arthur Vineberg, whose team pioneered cardiac bypass surgery. He began his practice in Stamford, CT in Internal Medicine and Non-Invasive Cardiology in 1958. He served as an attending physician at Stamford Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital until March 2008 when he retired from private practice. Upon his retirement, his patients established the Lambros E. Siderides, M.D. Scholarship Fund to benefit medical students at Yale University School of Medicine and University of Connecticut Medical School. He continued to practice cardiology at the Stamford Hospital, interpreting electrocardiograms and stress tests until December 2009. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians. A gifted and dedicated teacher, he was an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, at Yale University School of Medicine, and at New York Medical College; he was also a committed residency instructor at Stamford Hospital. He was a member of the Connecticut State Medical Society and the Fairfield County Medical Association. Dr. Siderides was a devout member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangels, where he was a frequent reader and cantor. He was appointed an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarch in America, Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle, an honor that was bestowed upon him by his great friend and spiritual father, Archbishop Iakovos of North and South America. A student and scholar all his life, Dr. Siderides was an insatiable reader of history and political discourse. His other passions included spending time with his grandchildren, sharing his knowledge and his stories, vacationing in Kennebunkport, Maine, sailing, photography, and gardening. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Cleo Siderides, M.D., senior pathologist at Stamford Hospital, his children Marianna Siderides; Elizabeth Siderides Theofanidis and her husband, Stylianos; Elliot Siderides and his wife Margaret; and his grandchildren, Nicholas, Lambros and Alexandra Theofanidis and John, Andrew and Cleo Siderides. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at the Church of the Archangels, 1527 Bedford Street from 4:00-9:00pm with the Trisagion Service at 7:30pm. I can only echo the many loving, cherished, warm remarks made by so many of his patients and reflect upon the times I sat in the waiting room as the same compliments were uttered about Dr. Sid. I loved seeing him and our discussing an array of ,topics i.e. politics, the economy, the future of healthcare as he saw it, and his ev er present concern for the underclass.
He was a "legend" in his own time.He was not only my doctor, but also my friend whom I felt I could call at any hour, on any day, if I needed him. His passing has left a huge void in the medical profession and like the expression people have said "after God made him, he threw away the mold"
Dr's Cleo, Elizabeth & family members, you should be very proud of him and I trust you will bask in the myriads of wonderful memories of such a wonderful man. I will miss him very much. God rest his soul.

To Drs. Elizabeth and Cleo and family, my sympathies, and deep gratitude for sharing this great man's life with us. I think it is most difficult for family members left behind by one who departs, but I am convinced Dr. Siderides is in a better place, still watching over us. We are blessed to have Dr. Elizabeth carry on his physician tradition. "Dr. Sid" was not only physician to me, but also to many of my extended family. He is one of the kindest, strongest, warmest, smartest, and most inspiring people I have met in my life. He remembers not only details about your medical conditions, but also about you and your family. He would ask me, "how is Number 1 aunt (both my parents have 7 siblings each) in Hawaii" or "how is the uncle who does not like to wear socks?" You could tell he truly cared for you as a human being, taking time to be present for you, and seeming to pay little heed to insurers' incentives for processing more patients in less time. I think that is why we did not mind waiting for him. Even in the fragility of his advanced age, he personified the indomitable human spirit, as he continued to treat and heal people at hospitals and elsewhere. I always felt comforted and comfortable in his presence. I loved the way his eyes would crinkle when he laughed. He was all about quality medicine and humane care. My departed grandmother, regal matriarch of a large clan, who was in her late eighties and spoke minimal English haltingly, received wonderful care from Dr. Lambros and was so moved once that she shocked us by saying "I love you" to him in an affectionate voice. We echo her sentiments - we love you too, Dr. Lambros Siderides.

I am very sorry for your loss, and it saddens me deeply to hear of the passing of Doc. I feel compelled to tell a short story about Doc because he saved my life. Doc saw me every year for a physical and in September of 2001 I sat in his office at the age of 32 and upon completion of listening to my heart he asked that I schedule a stress test and echo imaging. Long story short Doc somehow through a routine physical found that I had a dilated aorta. He sent me to Yale and Columbia for future tests and everywhere I went there was a feeling of great respect for Doc. The cardiac specialists could not tell me how Doc diagnosed the problem and when I asked him for an answer he simply replied I will not give away my Grandmothers recipes. He will truly be missed by this writer and many others, god bless

Dear Dr. Cleo and the Siderides Family:

We are deeply sorry for the death of Dr. Lambrose Siderides. He was a great physician. Most of all, he was an amazing person, sincere, compassionate and tireless in his care for others. He communicated with his broad smile and concern for his patients, even without the need of language.
* He took care of my uncle Cardinal Ignatius Kung from age 88 to age 99 who had no medical care for 32 years.
* He took care of my mother, Anna Young, from age 77 to age 92.
* Dr. also took care of my mother-in-law, Mrs. Teresa Kung for 7 years including 3 years while she was paralyzed due to a stroke.

Even though all three patients did not speak English, they had total understanding and confidence in Dr. Siderides. Due to his expert and loving care, Dr. Siderides gave them each 10, 15 years of life that they otherwise might not have.

I know the good Lord will look at Dr. Siderides lovingly just as Dr. Lambros looked at his patients. The Lord will reward Dr. Lambrose with eternal life as he had given his patients the most precious gift of diginity and long life.

Dr. Siderides death is a great loss not only to his family, but to thousands of his patients who were fortunate enough to know him. Trusting in the goodness of our Lord, we know that Dr. will continue his very active life in heaven, and putting in a word here and there for us.

Dr. Cleo, may God comfort you during this difficult period. With gratitude for the life of Doctor Lambrose Siderides, we will remember you and your family in our prayers.
