I. GOLDENBERG Obituary

GOLDENBERG, I. IRA, 73, of Miami Beach, FL, passed away peacefully in his sleep early last week - to join his heroes, Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio in the great Yankee Stadium beyond. Dr. Goldenberg (a.k.a. Ira, Itzik, Dad, Zaide), originally of Bronx, NY, started his baseball career at a young age at PS 44 (Farragut Junior High School). He later achieved idol status at the storied Camp Kinderland, as both second baseman and star shortstop. While his recreational passion was baseball, his professional passion centered on issues of social change and justice. Having held positions at Yale, Harvard and other distinguished institutions of higher education, he finally retired from academic administration from Florida International University in 2001. Having earned and been recognized for countless achievements and awards over his very active and productive 50+ year career, it was during his retirement that he received one of his proudest in 2004, the "Mitzvah Award" as a volunteer in the ER of Mount Sinai Medical Center. His beloved wife of over 46 years, Susan (a.k.a. Sunny), passed away earlier this year. He is survived by his four adoring children (Ari, Sair, Raychul and Asa) and ten loving grandchildren (Zachariah, Elijah, Autumn, Tigerlily, Cerina, Pazit, Ila, Alyssa, Jaxon and Laken). It is his wish, that in lieu of flowers, all donations be made to the "Fannie and Nathan Goldenberg Summer Scholarship Fund" c/o Camp Kinderland 16 Court Street, Suite 2200 Brooklyn, NY 11241. I had him as a professor/mentor when he was with the FRED program and New Hampshire College (now Southern Vermont University in) in 1979. His insights into the role of the helping professions in society have stood the test of time. I am a wiser - and more effective - person thanks to him.

I am a retired faculty member of FIU having worked with Ira for many years. He was an understanding and kind person who loved his work and believed in passing on this love when we would host the Future Educators of America. These high school and community college students were our legacy to the students in our public and private schools, he would always say to me after the meetings. May he rest in peace forever.

If they asked me, I could write abook about my beloved friend, Ira. We met in Camp Kinderland in 1952 and were bonded as brothers ever since. The Goldenberg family and the Kinderland mishpoche are gathering to celebrate his life on December 18. He leaves a rich legacy of scholarship, activism, athleticism, advocacy and love. Larger than life, he was a true Renaissance Man. Though deeply saddend by his untimely death so soon after his beloved wife Susan, we--his heirs--vow to "Carry it on!" because our love for Ira is "here to stay." Joe Dorinson

I remember Dean Ira Goldenberg as a wonderful man, with a wonderful sense of humor, who worked hard and still found time for family.

I feel fortunate to have known Dean Ira as a grad student, teaching assistant, and (with his support) a graduate of FIU's College of Education and a fellow educator (because of this degree) at Barry University.
