George Ioannides Obituary

IOANNIDES, M.D. GEORGE, beloved husband and father, died on Tuesday, July 8, 2003 after a long and brave struggle with a malignant brain tumor. Dr. Ioannides was a physician in the Miami community for almost fifty years. He was born Thessaloniki, Greece and received his Medical Degree at the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki School of Medicine in 1952. He came to Miami in 1957 for a Residency, followed by a Fellowship, in Anatomical Pathology at the University of Miami School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital. During this time at Jackson, he met Andrea, who was a technologist at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and they were married in 1963. Their three children were born soon afterwards. His dedication to the University of Miami School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital continued throughout his life. Dr Ioannides began as an instructor in the Departments of Pathology and Dermatology and eventually became a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pathology. He was most proud of founding UM's Dermatopathology Laboratory, and served as its first Director from 1965-1969 and again in 1992-1993. He was Director of Pathology at St. Francis Hospital in Miami Beach for 10 years. He established his own private dermatopathology laboratory in 1978. In 1971, he honored his fellow countryman, teacher and friend by founding the Annual George Papanicolaou Memorial Seminars in Gynecologic Pathology, Southern Medical Association, and served as Director for the next 20 years. He also held various leadership positions within the South Florida Society of Pathologists, Florida Society of Pathologists, Southern Medical Association and was a Past President of the American Society of Dermatopathology. Dr. Ioannides was world-renowned in his field of dermatopathology. He was invited to speak at international medical conferences, and had published numerous journal articles. He was actively involved in Miami's Greek community, and dedicated his faith , especially with the parish of St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, where he served as President and a member of the choir. He was also member and Past President of A.H.E.P.A. Chapter #476. Dr. Ioannides truly was a unique and noble man who had touched many lives - professionally and personally. He is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Andrea; his son, Tim Ioannides, MD; his two daughters, Barbara (Robert) Alderman, and Ann (Victor) DeLeon; his brother, Kyriakos (Nadia) Ioannides, MD of Jacksonville, FL; his sister, Sotiria (Christos) Papadopoulos of Thessaloniki, Greece and two grandchildren, Anne Francesca and George Andrew Alderman, who were the light of his life. Viewing services will be held Thursday, July 10, 2003, 7-9 p.m. at Stanfill Funeral Home, 10545 S. Dixie Highway and the funeral will be Friday, July 11, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, 7901 N. Kendall Drive, Miami, FL. I am Dr. Nikolaos Tsivoulis from Larissa Greece, both Pathologist and Homeopath. I got to know Dr. Ioannides at the Ingternational Meeting in Athens late summer 1985 when I was finishing the Residency in Pathology with the Metaxas Memorial in Piraeus. He was something apart at the meeting. He just excelled by his profound knowledge in Dermatohistopathology.. I was happy to get to know him better on the boats cruise late evening in the Saronikos Gulf with his wife and his close friend Mr. Karamanlakis. It was my delight to get to know him and eternal Peace upon his soul

My deepest sympathy to Tim and his remaining family. Of all his accomplishments, (which are many and noteworthy) Tim's father left his greatest legacy in having produced children with character and values. He will always live through them.

Although I did not know Dr. Ioannides, I have had the extreme priviledge of knowing his daughter, Barbie. She is a spectacular woman who I am sure received much of her wonderful values from her devoted parents. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Barbie, and your family as you travel through these difficult moments. May God be with you and give you the strength you need to move forward in faith.

To all of the family,
Your loss is felt around the world. George was a great man, physician and friend. He was there for me and my family on several occasions when we needed fatherly advice/support. My boys called him Papou too! He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. You all are in our thoughts and prayers.
