George Jenkins Obituary

George Jenkins, III&bb&George Harry Jenkins, III, 81, was called to heaven June 30, 2002 while boating in British Columbia.&pe&He is survived by Beth, his wife of 57 years, his children Clyde and Dori Jenkins of Mukilteo, Peggy and Steve Hurd of Everett, Pam Jenkins of Olympia, and Nancy and Stefano Mammi of Padova, Italy. He is also missed by his seven grandchildren, Anne and Katy Hurd, Betsy and Elli Jenkins, and Luca, Marco, and Dan Mammi.&pe&George was a Captain in the Marine Corps, where he served as a flight instructor in World War II, and as a forward air controller in the Korean War. He graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in mechanical engineering. For 33 years, he worked at the Gates Rubber Company in Denver, CO, where he was Vice President of Research and Development for 12 years, and later Vice President of Science and Technology. He held six patents and was a long-standing member of the Industrial Research Institute. He served on the Engineering Advisory Board of the University of Colorado, Denver Campus, on the Board of Directors of the Boy Scouts, and on the Cherry Hills Water District Board.&pe&Residents of Denver for 47 years, George and Beth moved to Orcas Island, WA in 1994. They are long time members of the Orcas Island Yacht Club, and George served as Commodore from 2000-2001. He was President of the Orcas Highlands Neighborhood Association from 1995 to 2002.&pe&George was known for his honesty, wonderful sense of humor, generosity, creativity, innovation, diverse interests, delightful sense of fun, and dedication. He was an accomplished pilot, an avid boater, photographer, and painter, and was devoted to his wife, family, and friends. He will be deeply missed.&pe&Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, July 8, 2002 at Emmanuel Episcopal Parish, Orcas Island, WA with interment following at Woodlawn Cemetery.&pe& Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel, Anacortes and the San Juan Islands.
