James Richard Berry, born in Royal Oak, MI on July 20, 1932 passed away November 5, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. Jim graduated from Rice University with a BS in architecture in 1956 where he met and married his wife of 60 years, Joan Britton Berry. Together they had three children, Rick Berry (Christy), Susan Monnin (Steve), and Karen Rose (Jimmy). He is survived by his three children and their spouses, five grandchildren; Adam and Thomas Berry, David Monnin, and Michael and Matthew Rose; sister-in-law Mary Britton, and two nephews; Charles (Diana) and David Britton. Jim is predeceased by one grandchild, Daniel Monnin, brother–in-law H.L. Britton, and niece Elisabeth Britton.
Jim served in the US Army and was stationed at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX. Upon completing his military service, Jim and Joan moved to Houston where Jim began his career in architecture. Jim primarily worked for the University of Houston and Texas Commerce Bank, among other large institutions. He served as an elder at the First Christian Church for many years. Over the years, his favorite pastime by far was carving all types of ducks and geese. Some of these carvings were meticulously done, looking almost like there was a duck in your house. Others were artistic in nature; serving as beautiful works of art. Jim, Dad, Pa Paw, - you are loved and will be missed. A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church 1601 Sunset, Houston, Texas on November 11, 2017 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Christian Church or the charity of your choice.
