Richard Welsh Obituary

Dr. Richard A. Welsh

LANCASTER: Dr. Richard A. Welsh, 93, of Lancaster, OH, passed away, Sunday March 12, 2017, at his residence. He was born January 6, 1924, in Springfield, OH, to the late William H. and Mary (Mamie) Hennessy Welsh.

Dr. Welsh was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree by the University of Dayton, and his Doctor of Medicine degree by The Ohio State University. He served an internship at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton, OH. He then practiced general medicine in North Star and Fort Recovery, OH. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict, Dr. Welsh served a radiology residency at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton, OH. He then was awarded a residency at Cincinnati General Hospital, under Dr. Ben Felson, a nationally renowned radiologist, who literally wrote the book on radiology.

In 1955, he joined Dr. George F. Jones in a partnership practice of Radiology, during which time he was a member of the staff at Lancaster Hospital (now Fairfield Medical Center), Mount St. Mary Hospital in Nelsonville, and Hocking Valley Community Hospital in Logan, OH.

Dr. Welsh's education while in Cincinnati included experience in nuclear medicine, which qualified him to establish a nuclear medicine department at the Lancaster Hospital.

In anticipation of a shortage of radiological technologists, Drs. Jones and Welsh established a school of radiological technology at Lancaster Hospital. During the approximately 28 years of existence, this school served the needs of X-Ray departments locally, as well as in Logan, Circleville and several Columbus hospitals and physicians' offices.

During his career, Dr. Welsh served as Chief of Staff of the hospital, and President of the Central Ohio Radiological Society. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, an honorary distinction based on the respect of his peers. Dr. Welsh retired in 1990.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years Ann C. Bourke Welsh, his wife of 21 years, Marlene A. (Walton) Welsh, grandson Matthew O'Connell, son-in-law David Schorr, his parents, his brothers Dr. Robert E. (Kathleen) Welsh and William J. (Mary Louise) Welsh, and mentors and friends Dr. George F. Jones and Carl Flege, Sr.

Survivors include daughters: Katie (Joe) Beran of Fredericktown, OH, Ellen (Michael) O'Connell of Louisville, KY, Molly (Nicholas) Weiland of Logan, OH, Julie Schorr and Ann (John) Kelley of Lancaster, OH; sons: Patrick of Galveston, TX, Timothy (Jo Anne) of Lancaster, OH, John Seamus (Marie) of Derwood, MD, Dr. Terry (Sharon) of Lancaster, OH, Richard (Dorothy) of Huntersville, NC, and Matthew (Deborah) of Granville, OH; Elizabeth "Peachie" Welsh Snider (dear friend Dr. Gordon Snider) of Lancaster, OH; stepdaughters: Therese (Dr. Chris) Ryckman of Lancaster, OH, Alane (Randy) Morris of Cincinnati, OH, and Maureen (Pete) Ebel of Columbus, OH; stepsons: Mark (Mary Beth) Walton of Bremen, OH, Ben (Laurie) Walton of Madison Heights, MI, David (Aimee) Walton of Carroll, OH, and Robert (Anna) Walton of Cincinnati, OH; 78 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, as well as treasured nieces and nephew. A special thanks to Amie Ellis Michel.

Dr. Welsh was an active member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. He was a strong advocate for the continuation of Catholic secondary education in Fairfield County, and was instrumental in the establishment of Fisher Catholic High School. He later worked with others in the community to establish an Endowment Fund in an attempt to insure the fiscal stability of the school.

He was a member of the Historic Lancaster Commission, Symposiarchs, American College of Radiology, Radiological Society of North America.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lancaster, OH, or to Fisher Catholic High School, Lancaster, OH.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Craig Eilerman at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church at 10:30a.m. on St. Patrick's Day, Friday March 17, 2017.

Visitation will be held at Sheridan Funeral Home on Thursday March 16, 2017 from 2-8 p.m. A vigil service will be conducted at 8:15p.m. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery with military honors.
