On December 29, 2022, Larry Skinner, devoted husband, father, lifelong educator and Basketball Coach, passed away surrounded by his loving family after a sudden medical condition.
"Coach Skinner" as he was known to many of his friends and basketball players, started his Varsity Basketball Coaching career in Weslaco, Texas, continued onto Del Rio, Texas, San Antonio, Texas, Corpus Christi- Mathis, Texas, and Houston, Texas. Always and overachiever and passionate coach, during his Varsity Coaching Career he totaled 505 wins.
In 2019, Larry was recognized by the State of Texas University Interscholastic League for reaching the prestigious 500-Varsity Wins Milestone. As a lifelong teacher and Basketball Coach, Larry had memorable basketball highlights including an article in Sports Illustrated for a 98-0 shut-out basketball game, acknowledgment in the San Antonio Newspaper of a record setting high scoring basketball game, and participating in WNBA girls basketball camps during the development of the WNBA league in San Antonio. Larry's passion for basketball and winning led his basketball teams to state play-offs numerous times. He earned several Coach of the Year awards and also earned Corpus Christi Caller Times Coach of the Year honors. He continued his basketball coaching passion by volunteer coaching with youth throughout the Houston area with YMCA, TNBA, and Houston Hoops.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Roslyn Alibin-Skinner, daughter Aysha Skinner, 16, and son Aydan Skinner, 12. He is also survived by his brother and sisters, Johnnie Skinner, Margaret Sexton, Sylvia Britton, Barbara Hunter, and Venita Ricks.
Family will receive guests on Thursday, January 19th from 3 PM to 8 PM at Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home, with a 10 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, January 20th at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, located at 2730 Nelwood Dr. Houston, TX 77038, Rite of Committal following at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
