Rest in peace, Lister. Your willingness to both share and listen to a good story will always be appreciated and missed.
I hear the "sAIrpents" still tremble at the mention of your name.

Professor Matheson is one of the greatest professors I have known during my Journeys in Education. He was a gentle man full of wisdom, warmth, knowledge and advice that is still relevant today. Professor Matheson, may God always grant you peace and Heavenly rest.

It is never too late to honor a colleague and friend. Lister died too young. I was hoping to tap into Lister's knowledge, advice, and interest in language across the centuries. But I came looking for him too late. The Lister I knew was not the stereotypical dour Scotsman, but rather a man of humor, goodness, and a willingness to share his good will and good knowledge.

I was a graduate student of Lister's at Michigan State in the mid-1990s. I just hear today 4-7-2013 of his death, and I'm so saddened by this loss. Such a wonderful man, such a wonderful professor! His impish smile, his unwavering enthusiasm, his generous leadership--I feel so privileged to have been his student. Blessings to all who mourn his loss. Diane Smith, Storrs, CT

Stars bless you, Lister. What you gave to speculative fiction won't be measured now, but in generations from now. And what you gave to me is plain. I'm glad to have known you and shared in your work. Besides which, you made me laugh. Here's to new constellations.

My memories of my cousin Lister go back nearly 60 years to the time spent with him in Glasgow. Always great times exploring the Park. Then in later years as teenagers with me visiting Glasgow spending hours in the Uni Bar playing table football, drinking heavy and having a greasy beautiful scotch pie. He was a great cousin, Scottish through and through but never putting the English down. My sister Susan and I will greatly miss him. God Bless him and be with Tess and Calum.

It was my pleasure to study under Professor Matheson. I did not know him for long, and yet he always went out of his way to provide insight, assistance, and energy when I needed it the most, quickly becoming one of my favorite and most trusted professors. He will be missed. My condolences go out to Professor Tavormina and family.

My condolences to Professor Matheson's family. I took his course in Scottish literature as an undergrad at MSU (1999-2003). We read everything from Robert Burns to Trainspotting. I remember at Halloween he turned the lights off, lit candles, and dressed up in a long black robe and acted a scene from the book we were reading. It was one of a very favorite courses at MSU and I am saddened to read of his passing.

Lister Matheson, more than anyone else, got me into medieval studies. He was my undergraduate mentor, the director of my senior thesis, the adviser for an internship I did, my professor in three classes, and my most important recommender for graduate schools. He was a model to which I still aspire, both personally and professionally. I'm incredibly sad that he's gone. Best wishes to his family and his friends; I can only imagine how much you miss him.
