Mr. Smith attended high school in Lynn, Mass., and received his bachelor's degree from Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill, Mass. He also attended University of New England, Biddeford and was a certified nursing assistant through the state of Maine.
He served honorably in the Navy from 1954 through 1960 during the Korean Conflict. He also served 20 years in the Maine Army National Guard.
Harold's education and career was in the field of mental health services. He was employed by Augusta Mental Health Institute as mental health worker; he also held the position of residence manager for Snow Pond Residence, Sidney and Mobius in Newcastle; residential director with Forest City Resources, Embden Pond Project, Solon; and case manager with Uplift Inc. and Motivational Services.
Harold was a member of St. Michael Parish at St. Augustine Catholic Church. He was a life member of Abnaki Council #334 Knights of Columbus, a life member and Past Faithful Navigator of Abnaki Assembly #346 4th degree Knights of Columbus, a member of Abnaki Assembly 4th degree Knights of Columbus Color Guard and member and past commander of John F. McPherson, Chapter 1 Disabled American Veterans. Harold previously served as adjutant for the state of Maine's DAV and in 1995 was appointed by Gov. Angus King to serve as a member on the Board of Trustees of the Maine Veterans' Homes.
He was predeceased by his parents; and son-in-law, Calvin Pyles, of Florida.
Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline Dostie-Smith, of Sidney; one son, Danny Lee Smith, and his wife, Beverly, of American Canyon, Calif.; two daughters, Lisa Pyles of Naples, Fla., and Chrissanda Welch and her husband, Neal, of Readfield; one brother, Walter Smith, of Derry, N.H.; one sister, Beverly Smith, of Methuen, Mass.; five grandchildren, Angela Smith and her partner, Chris Bruce, Heather Bell and her husband, Andrew, of California, Calvin Pyles, of Florida, Pfc. Daniel Welch and Mathew Welch, of Readfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30 at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where members of Abnaki Assembly 4th degree Knights of Columbus are asked to meet at 5:30 p.m. to make ready for the honor guard, and where members of Abnaki Council Knights of Columbus are asked to meet at 6:15 p.m. to offer a prayer service. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
