Growing up in the late 1950's/early 1960's in Ireland we had two iconic people, Pope John 23rd and President JFK. Many homes had pictures of these two great men displayed in a prominent position, usually on their sitting room walls. It was 50:50 which man was most favoured in any particular household or with any particular household member.
Our house was different. My mother,Molly, had both mens large framed photos hanging in our sitting room. Both men had an equal share of Mollys admiration, respect and support. However both John 23rd and JFK most definitely took second place behind Patrick Mc Mahon, from The Square, Balbriggan.
In our house Patricks photo had pride of place and Molly never lost any opportunity to sing Patricks praises. His success was our success. He had huge talent, unlimited potential and was loved by everyone.
He was Mollys pride and joy and by osmosis he was also mine.

I will never forget the time when Seamus Heany was visiting you at your office. You asked if I could go pick up a bottle of Black Bush Whiskey for you. I stood there a little taken aback and you probably thought to yourself "what is wrong with this girl." I quietly replied "um, I'm only 19 years old and can't legally buy alcohol." God bless you Patrick, your personality was one-of-a-kind.

once when asked to give a radio commentary mimicking michael o hare, a ten year old patrick was offered 6 pence to do a commentary of an imaginary game of football where dublin beat cavan, his team. this happened after he returned from living in cavan with an aunt.
a crowd gathered to listen on the square in balbriggan.
dublin were leading until the final minute but cavan scored a goal to win the game!
as a result patrick forfeited the 6 pence.
LOYALTY was one of his core traits.
