Andrews Mortuary and Crematory - Market Street Chapel - Wilmington Obituary

Richard Claude Summers, 56, passed away peacefully at his home, Sunday, September 27, 2015 after losing a well fought battle with liver cancer. Rick was born January 3, 1959 in Greensboro, NC and attended John T. Hoggard High School where he played baseball and football. After graduation he attended Louisburg College and later enlisted in the United States Navy. Rick worked for CSX Railroad for 16 years and only stepped down due to his illness. Rick loved spending time outdoors hunting, fishing and boating. He was an avid NASCAR fan. He was always happiest on the water.
Rick was predeceased by his parents Doug and Sylvia Summers and is survived by his wife Toni Lynne Summers, "To-To" and a sister, Sheila Summers Irrera and her husband Joe, a niece, Kristin Irrera and his nephews, Joseph Irrera, Nicholas Irrera and Andrew Irrera. Ricky is also survived by a great nephew, Noah Irrera, all of Wilmington. Rick also left behind his faithful dog, BooBoo who was always waiting by the backdoor for him.
The family is grateful to everyone who supported Rick throughout his illness and would like to especially thank Dr. William McNulty and Dr. Steven Crawford for never giving up on him. Rick received excellent and loving care from Lower Cape Fear Hospice in his final days at home and the family will never forget their kindness. Also, a heartfelt thank you to the staff and congregation of Wrightsville United Methodist Church for their prayers and visits, especially Bill Braswell.
At Rick's request a private ceremony with his family will be held at a date to be determined. Rick wanted no one to be saddened by his passing but to find joy in his life and celebrate in their own personal way to acknowledge his impact on their life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Lower Cape Fear Hospice at 1406 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.
