Rose Marie Nunes, 80, of Middletown, RI passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. Rose Marie was born March 28, 1938 in Newport, R.I. to the late Augustus J. and Mary A. Nunes of Middletown. She was preceded in death by her brother Augustus J. Nunes Jr., her sister Alice Serpa and sister in law, Sheila Nunes. She is survived by her sister Mary A. Dias (husband Manuel C. Dias) of Newport, sister Barbara Charland of Newport, brother Joseph Nunes of Portsmouth and Patricia Toracinta, her niece and caregiver. Rose Marie also leaves nieces, nephews and many grand nieces and nephews, whom she dearly adored.
Rose Marie was an elementary school teacher for 30 years. She first taught in Florida, then Middletown and finished her teaching career in the Newport Public Schools, at Underwood Elementary School.
Her siblings were always her closest friends. She loved her faith, friends and family so very much. She loved to travel and was always escaping weekends away to Cape Cod. Rose Marie was also an accomplished pianist, where she always found such joy. She loved playing at many family gatherings, where one would just have to hum a song and she could play it.
Our family would like to sincerely thank the wonderful health care staff at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Village House and Visiting Nurse Home and Hospice Care. She met such kind, caring and extraordinary people, whom she deeply appreciated and loved very much.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, Newport at 9:30 am. Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery, 465 Brown's Lane, Middletown. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
