SANFORD FRIEDMAN Obituary

FRIEDMAN--Sanford, 81, distinguished writer, died after a heart attack in his New York apartment on April 20. He was a precocious playwright before publishing his four ground breaking novels "Totempole," "A Haunted Woman," "Still Life," and "Rip Van Winkle." Later he taught writing at Juilliard and at SAGE. He is survived by his brother B.H. Friedman also a distinguished writer. Other survivors include his companion Dr. James Bonczek, as well as Sanford's niece Daisy Friedman, nephew Dr. Jackson Friedman and wife Petra Bertilsson-Friedman and their children Oskar Lino and Linnea Kai. A memorial gathering will be held at Ethical Culture Society, 2 West 64th Street on May 26 at 3pm.

Sandy, you will be forever missed, as being utterly brilliant, original, and yet so generous in spirit. Your grace and strenght gave us hope and light ...how poor we feel, without you. Even more grieviously, letters and arts and love are diminished, without your presence.

Every Tuesday, you'd so patiently welcome our efforts at writing, correcting us gently, and sometimes sharply, so that we'd feel the pain less...so many embryonic works you nurtured, so many were brought to fruition because of your robust purpose.
May your family and friends accept my deep condolences.
