BERNARD LANDIS Obituary

LANDIS--Dr. Bernard, a longtime New York psychoanalyst who once taught with Erich Fromm, returned to school at 70 for a degree in painting, played piobaireachd--the earliest Scottish bagpipe music--and was an ardent bicyclist and early practitioner of tai chi, died Tuesday in his home in Sleepy Hollow. He was 88. Dr. Landis's doctoral thesis, Ego Boundaries, a study of the differentiation between the self and the external world, was published in 1970. He was a clinical associate professor of psychology in psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College, an assistant attending psychologist at Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic, and an associate professor of psychology at SUNY Purchase. Dr. Landis was also co-editor, with Dr. Edward S. Tauber, of In the Name of Life: Essays in Honor of Erich Fromm. Dr. Landis and Dr. Fromm, the psychoanalyst and philosopher, taught a series of seminars in Locarno, Switzerland, in 1974. More recently he coauthored three papers with Dr. Patricia Romano on the effects of biofeedback on respiratory diseases. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 59 years, Erica Landis; his daughter, Dylan Landis Baquet; his sister, Elaine Breiger; and his grandson, Ari Baquet. Contributions in his memory may be made to www.CurePSP.org or www.TheNation.com. Memorial to be announced.

Dr. Landis was my therapist for a number of years during the 1980s. He was a fine man, and an excellent professional. I will always remember him as an influential person in my life.
