ALAN SINGER Obituary

SINGER--Alan G., beloved husband of Eleanor, father of Lawrence and Emily, grandfather of Rebecca, Quinton, Isaac and Elizabeth, brother of Natalie, and uncle of David, Laurie, and Natalie, died on October 1 of complications of pancreatic cancer. He was born in 1925. After serving in the infantry in World War II and playing in an Army band, he studied music at Queens College and New York University. An avid amateur clarinetist, composer, and arranger, he taught instrumental music in the New York public schools before joining IBM as a programmer and systems analyst. After retirement he moved to Ann Arbor, where his wife joined the University of Michigan as a Research Professor. He was a long-time member of the Washtenaw Community Concert Band and also volunteered at the Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum. There will be no services. Mrs. Singer and family,

I had the great joy of making music with Alan the last 15 years or so. I especially enjoyed playing big band music with him in the Riverside Big Band. Alan always brought authenticity to the music, and he could make me laugh.

My uncle Alan...what can I say? So smart, fun, kind, musical, generous and decent. A great family man who stayed active 'til the end. What a loss for our family and his friends. My heartfelt condolences to Eleanor, Emily and Lawrence and their families, and to his sister Natalie.

Dear Mrs. Singer and family,
I had the pleasure of working with Alan at the Northeast Branch of the AADL. He was a wonderful volunteer, repairing tapes for our Books on Tape collection in addition to other things. He was always smiling, cheerful and a pleasure to know. May wonderful memories bless you in the coming days and months.
Sincerely, Rebecca Lester

Dear Eleanor & Family,

I knew Alan through the Washtenaw Community Concert Band. I am a fellow clarinetist and have often sat next to Alan in band. His humor and helpful advice will be missed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

Dear Eleanor and Family,

It was my honor to know Alan even if only for a short time. How I wish I could have heard him play the clarinet and talk about music. May your hearts be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived and may the happy times ease you in your sorrow. My heart and deepest sympathies are with you.

Love,
Sherry
