McLACHLEN, Joan McGlade
November 29, 1922 – October 26, 2012
A month before turning 90, Joan McLachlen (nee McGlade), a lifetime devout Catholic, died in hospital after a short illness. Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, she was trained as a machinist in 1936 and survived air raids, war rationing and bombing of Coventry, UK, where she worked in a Lancaster bomber factory. Joan came to Canada as a war bride in 1947 and resided in Lakeview Terrace for almost 60 years. Predeceased by her husband, Jack, and her five siblings, Nellie, Annie, Monica, Patsy and Terry. She was the mother of six: Angela (Paul Davis), David (Dawn nee Harwood), Helen (James Campbell), Philip, Kevin (Veronica Jamieson), Janet (Allan Martin). She was the grandmother of 11: Jennifer (Stephane Pepin), Jason (Dr. Poonam Dohutia), Geordie (Jennifer Bitz), Robin (Jen nee MacDonald), Lily (Paul Tracy), Emma Rose (Art Anderson), Izaak, Nolan, Shameen, Taylor and Shayliana. She was the great-grandmother of seven: Marie-Anne, Catherine, Darshanaa, Millan, Simon, Emily and Finley. Joan graduated from Algonquin College in 1972 in Early Childhood Education and taught at St. Martin's Nursery School Ottawa until 1994. After her retirement, Joan was active in St. Mark the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church parish in Aylmer where she made many friends. Many grateful thanks to the medical staff at the Hull Hospital for their excellent care, particularly Dr. Tavassoli, her surgeon, and the excellent doctors and nurses in the Intensive Care Unit, particularly Nurse Anita who was with Joan until the very end.
