EAST PEORIA - Peter Joseph Sobieski, 80, of East Peoria passed away at 6:06 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Peter was born Dec. 24, 1933, to Peter J. and Marya Dwulut Sobieski in Chicago. He married Nancy Jean Carty on Sept. 28, 1957, in Chicago.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy of East Peoria; children, Marivern "Mari" Sobieski of Palos Heights, formerly of Burbank, Peter J. (Hazel) Sobieski III of Chicago and Raymond J. (Amy) Sobieski of Washington; seven grandchildren, John, Ellen, Shaun, Katie, Carolyn, Samantha and Joseph; and three sisters, Lottie Oswald and Gloria Hardy, both of Oak Lawn, and Sonia Corse of Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Patrick Sobieski; two brothers; and two sisters.
He served as a Chicago fireman for 36 years and retired as captain of Truck Company 41 in 1996. Peter was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post 983 in East Peoria.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to PMD Foundation in honor of his grandson, Joey, at www.PMDfoundation.org.
There will be a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at St. Monica's Catholic Church in East Peoria. Father Stephen Willard will officiate. Visitation was Friday, Aug. 29, 2014 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Additional visitation will be a half hour prior to the service today at the church. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Peoria.
