Grant Miller Obituary

Grant D. Miller, M.D.

Reno - Grant D. Miller, M.D., passed away peacefully on May 31, 2019. He was 77.

Grant began working at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, in 1978. He served the school as a Professor, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, and Residency Director in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

He will be profoundly missed by his family and his many friends and colleagues. A recent tribute to him concluded with the following words: "It is difficult to find words for this thing that Grant does. Moments with Grant can go so deep, touch the heart, touch the mind, and somehow spread to others in a generous way. Grant has a way of standing close to human suffering, with kindness, compassion, curiosity and hope…helping to alleviate that suffering and or find meaning in it."

In 2012, Grant became a sculptor of welded and cut metal. Images of his work and further tribute to him can be found at his website, grantmillersculpture.com.

Sad to hear about Dr. Miller's passing. Comments in the obituary were true as can be about his compassion and delicate approach to friends and colleagues. He was one of favorite professors at the UNR School of Medicine. A wonderful person.

Leslie, I was so sorry to hear of Grants passing. My son, Kirby, at Not Just Furniture just let me know. Im not sure you would remember me but we went on a theater tour to London years ago with a group from UNR. Please accept my rather late but sincere condolences.

I had the pleasure of having Grant as a student in my classes at TMCC for three semesters. During that time Grant also became a friend as many of my students did. We enjoyed not only discussing art but also life's little twists and turns. Sometimes discussing the things we wished we would have done but also the direction we were taking in "real time". He was creating metal sculpture and found it very rewarding. He continued down the path and became very competent and respected as a metal sculptor. I was able to attend some of his openings at various galleries and venues and he seemed to be truly enjoying himself and the people admiring his work. He possessed a kin eye for balance and composition in his work. I believe Grant used this talent in all his endeavors. So highly respected in his field and most of what he chose to pursue. I took his compliments with great pride and one in particular stands out. It was because I had a hand in Grant discovering his ability to create metal sculpture that it was so uplifting to me. He said to me, shortly after winning best of show in 3-D work at the annual TMCC student art show: "You know John, I have published works, collected many awards, but winning this "Best of Show" award in metal sculpture is right at the top, it makes me feel good". Well my friend I hope to see your work adorning the "gates" when I see you next.

I had the pleasure of having Grant in my Welding for Art classes at TMCC for three semesters. During that time I not only enjoyed him as a student but also as a friend. I was able to attend some of Grants art shows after he continued on to pursue his new learned metal sculpture hobby before I retired and left Nevada. His work had progressed to where he was being recognized and held in high esteem as a metal sculptor. What talent in all his fields of endeavor. I've known some wonderful people in my life and I can say Grant was one of them. He will be missed. I will look for his work adorning the gates when I see him again.

Grant was simply a wonderful human being! He was my go to referral when I had a client who needed a medication consult -- he is the only psychiatrist I ever worked with who sent a client back saying -- No, this is a grief process that needs to be dealt with without medication AND he was right! He cared for others deeply and was gift to me, my friends, and my clients. I will miss his humor, creativity, and sensitive awareness of others and the world around him.

I was a patient of Dr. Miller. He was there for me in the darkest time of my life. He was the best doctor, but also the most caring person. Grant saved my life. I was blessed for having known him. My sincere condolences. He was dearly loved.

Grant was one of the most influential attendings that I worked with in medical school. He was always interested in the students and was always available to us. He helped me through a difficult time in med school and was one of my favorite people. I have gotten to know him better in the last 25 years, and my admiration has only grown. My condolences to his family, rest assured that there are many people who need his help up there, and I know that he is there for them. My love to you all,
Dr. Z.

Grant Miller was one of the finest psychiatrists, guides, mentors and sometimes lunch-mate that I have had the honor of knowing. Being with him was always being in a peaceful, quiet place, and I came away richer for having spent time with him.

Dear Leslie and family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. Grant was a client of mine for many years. One of the most dedicated I have ever had. Despite his health issues, he always had his chin up and would produce that soft uplifting laugh. His kind soul will be deeply missed.
Warmly,

My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. Miller. Take as much time as you need to cope with your grief and always look to God, who loves us, for "everlasting comfort". (2 Thessalonians 2:16, 17)
