David Hansen Obituary

David Steele Hansen
1936~2014
David Steele Hansen of Bountiful, UT, passed away among loved ones at home on May 28, 2014. He was born March 7, 1936 in Salt Lake City, UT, to Vivian Brown and Harry Eldon Hansen, the fourth of six children, and the family soon moved to American Fork, UT, where he was raised.
David graduated from American Fork High School and from Seminary. He enjoyed hunting with his dad and brothers. He attended BYU, and was known to exclaim "Rise and Shout" to his teenage children--on Saturday mornings. Carpentry was his first vocation, and later employed by the Utah Air National Guard as a training instructor before serving as a full-time missionary in the LDS Northern States Mission.
He met the love of his life, Shirlee Christofferson, of Lehi, UT. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 13, 1963, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013. David cherished Shirlee with all of his heart. His greatest joys were his wife, five children, and 18 grandchildren.
David made many friends while building an insurance benefits brokerage, and in serving on the Bountiful Irrigation District Board. He loved the opportunity to serve in the LDS church. He served as Bishop in his home ward, and was the first Bishop of the Millstream Young Adult Ward. His passion was missionary work, and was called to serve as Mission President of the Australia Sydney South Mission, 2000-2003; David and Shirlee loved every missionary with whom they served. Later, they served together as temple workers in the Bountiful, UT, temple for 6 years until illness prevented him from continuing. Working in the temple was an assignment he enjoyed beyond measure.
Most of all, he loved God, the Eternal Father, and His Son Jesus Christ. He loved the Prophets and The Brethren and sustained them all the days of his life. He also loved yard work, a mystery to his sons, who will miss working alongside him. It seems there was nothing he'd rather do with free time than hang around his spot of earth, tilling with his tractor, and planting gardens and trees, in order to create his own version of Eden.
David was an example of hard work, and devotion to Jesus Christ and to his family. He could not help telling people everywhere regarding the reality of Christ to the end of his life, and testified of his sure knowledge to the staff and doctors at the Huntsman hospital. His enthusiasm, love, and voice of counsel will be greatly missed.
David is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Owen and wife Norma. He is survived by his wife Shirlee, his children Holly (Todd) Steinicke, Tonya (Grant) Johnson, David (Roz) Hansen, Jeanne (David) Holland, Christopher (Stacy) Hansen, as well as 18 Grandchildren, two of whom are serving LDS missions. Sisters and Brothers: RoseAnn (Dale) Gunther, Edith (Loran) Bishop, Eldon (Betty (deceased)), Merrill (Sherry), John (Sandra), and Marilyn Hansen (deceased).
A viewing will be held at the LDS chapel in Bountiful, UT, 640 South 750 East, on Sunday, June 1st, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at the same address, Monday, June 2nd, 11:00 AM, with a viewing beforehand from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Interment at Lehi City Cemetery. Dear Sister Hansen,
What a great testimony it was to serve and be served by you and your husband in the Australia Sydney South Mission. This great man when I shook his hands and looked into his eyes, I knew that he knew that Jesus is the Christ and he was right where he was supposed to be. He is truly a servant of the Lord and he blessed me with a stronger testimony. Thank you Heavenly Father for serving with President David ∧ Sister Shirlee Hansen.

Since moving to Orem in 2012 we have been "out of the loop." It was very very late that we heard about David's passing, even having seen a new home being built in David's garden. After asking old friends in the Moss Hill Ward about that "new house" and finding out it was for Shirlee. We were very saddened to find out the "news." If we had been better informed, we would certainly have been to the viewing and funeral. Our service with David in the Bishopric of the Millstream Ward YA Ward was one we will always cherish and long remember and the special privilege we had of getting to know the Hansen family and feel of their spirit and love of the Gospel. At this time of despair we send our love and prayers to Shirlee and all the family............Tom & Elaine Wride

Hansome is what we called our wonderful Bishop. Honor is the only word to describe such a loving, generous, beautiful man. All my love to Shirlee and children...you will be in our prayers.

Dear Hansen family, I am so sorry to hear of "Dad" Hansens passing. I loved spending time at your home through my teenage years into my twenties. You both were such great examples to me along with having a great daughter that I cherish as one of my closest friends. I am so sorry I can't be there but know I have your family in my prayers. Few people in my life have impacted me in the way that President Hansen did. In one of the most formative times in my life, he was an example to me of what it meant to be a true disciple of Christ. I will forever be grateful for his example and his wisdom. Thank you, President. God be with you 'til we meet again.

Dear Shirlee and family,

It is with sadness that I read of the passing of your beloved David. I likened his experience to that of Elder Neal Maxwell not only because they shared the same illness but because he brought with him the spirit of a giant of a man. I could always feel it when he was in my room at the eye center. His influence on the life of others was doubtless profound. May you find comfort as you ponder his Christlike life.

Sincerely,

Harald Olafsson

Dave Hansen is one of the greatest men I've ever met. I saw his work ethic and generosity to our family as a teenager when he poured concrete at our home. He treated youth with respect and we all loved him. Dave has a great balance of taking things serious that should be taken seriously and a sense of humor. He has no guile. I'm grateful for the influence of Dave and the Hansen family in my life.

Indelible lessons learned from a dedicated and valiant son of God form the foundation for most of my success and happiness as an adult. President Hansen showed me great kindness and trust, and inspired my mind to seek God with exponentially increasing fervor. I loved him in a way that transcends even familial relations, as many of us in Sydney did, and I know that when we look back from the heights of our glorified futures we will see all the more clearly the beacon of stalwart faith and direction that he was for us at such a formative time in not only our mortal lives, but our eternal progression. We are all changed for the better having known and served our Lord alongside him.

Dear Shirlee, Holly, Todd and Hansen family: I am very saddened to hear the news of Dave's passing, but I rejoice in knowledge that Dave knows his Heavenly Father's plan for him and he strived to do God's will. I am so thankful for the friendship I had with Dave in this life and for his example of honesty and integrity. Dear Hansen Family:

David was an insurance representative for the law firm for which I was employed as the Human Relations Manager so we worked quite closely together in providing benefits for the employees. I truly never met a finer gentleman. He was kind, patient, respectful and very competent. My heart goes out to all of you at this time. May our Heavenly Father's blessings and comfort be with you. With love, Laura Van Bibber, Santaquin, UT

President Hansen as I knew him was a great man! He was my Mission President in Sydney, Australia where I served from 2000-2002. He was a man of integrity, faith and love. He had one of the most powerful testimonies of the restoration of Jesus Christ Church I have ever witnessed. It was not just shared in his words but lived every action and choice he made. His influence will be felt for generations to come through his posterity and missionaries around the world. The other side is rejoicing right now as one of the most valiant souls to walk this earth has come home to his heavenly home.

Sister Hansen may God bless you with peace and love at this difficult time also with the the memories of a life well lived. President Hansen I will miss you but look forward to the day I will see you again.

Much love,

Matt Cole

Dear Shirlee and Family, While serving in he presidency of the Northern States Mission I had the blessing of becoming acquainted with a most outstanding missionary with beautiful red hair. His love and devotion brought into the Church my dear friends the Frances Smith family. While attending one of the Smith children's wedding reception, I once again had the blessing of throwing my arms around my favorite red-headed missionary. I commented on the beautiful overcoat he was wearing. To my surprise he took it off and gave it to me. I tried to resist but he insisted. I jokingly told him I liked also all the rest of his clothes to which he invited me to come to his store and he would deck me out. Of course, I would not take advantage of his kind offer, but to this day I proudly wear in winter time my beautiful coat from my dear friend and fellow mission President David Hansen.
I express to you and your beautiful family my heartfelt sympathy at his passing. Please be assured of my love and prayers in your behalf at this tender time of parting.
David's life was a model of humility, courage, and steadfast devotion to his family and the church. His example of devotion as a husband, father, and grandfather influenced the lives of loved ones and all with whom he came in contact. I am confident your family members will take comfort in the quality of his life and in the memories you share of his aiding love for each of you. His great accomplishments were because he had by his side a most righteous and devoted eternal companion.
Although there is no substitute for the physical presence and love of a dear companion, father and grandfather, I pray your knowledge of the gospel will be a source of peace and that you will feel the comforting influence of the Holy Spirit. I also pray you may be sustained at this tender time of parting and in the years ahead by that spirit which comes from Him who said, " I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you." ( John 14:18) I rejoice with you in our knowledge of the Plan of Happiness. I send to you my love and blessings and as I am in my 90th year of life I may very well have the privilege of giving him a big hug before you. I send you my love and blessings.
