Joseph Smerko

Joseph Smerko, 70, of Minersville, passed away Wednesday evening at home.
Born in Heckscherville, he was a son of the late Stephen and Anna Glagola Smerko. He lived most of his life in Minersville.
He attended Cass Township schools and was employed as a coal miner in local operations.
He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Minersville, where he was active with church functions.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Charles, Stephen and Paul Smerko; and two sisters, Mary Smerko and Pauline Durgin.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, the former Lorraine Mizzer; a son, Joseph Michael, Minersville; three sisters, Anna Durovick, Ship Bottom, N.J., Helen Smerko, Duncott, and Julia Smerko, Arlington, Va.; nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Requiem Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. Monday in Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Ronald Barusefsky officiating. Friends may call Monday morning at Dutcavich Funeral Home, Minersville, from 6 a.m. until Panachida services at 9:15 a.m. No calling hours Sunday evening. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
