I learned of this 2 weeks after the fact and I am still in shock. Bill and I became teammates first, and brothers forever, at the Academy. There are very few people that I looked more forward to seeing and talking with. I will so miss watching his football teams. Vanderbilt, Rice, Jesuit, UAB, Austin Peay, CGA ... so many lives he touched and so much good he accomplished. I will miss you forever, Wild William. God Bless Lynn, Matt, Allison and Bill's parents, Bill and Shirley; they are such wonderful people.

As a co-coach with Bill for almost 10 years, we had a lot of great times and a few tough times. We had a lot of great conversations concerning both our coaching careers. My heart hurts terribly on learning of Bill's passing. My thoughts and prayers go to Lynn and the children that they can get through these difficult times and that Bill has finally found peace.

My deepest sympathies to the entire family on Billy's passing. As a CGA classmate of Billy's, our paths didn't cross after graduation until last summer when he made the trip to Ft. Lauderdale to attend a USCG ship commissioning, when one of his former CGA football players was assuming command of the newest cutter. That to me was just one example of the committment he made to the players he touched over the years, both during and after their sports careers, to point them towards the right path in life. Bill was a really good man who cared deeply about his students, athletes, friends, and family. I already miss our daily talks about sports, but more importantly, about life.

Bill was a great supportive big brother to Jim at Wilmington, and a great coach, competitor and friend to me in later college coaching careers. He was intense and determined, but always caring about his players. His passing is a great loss for his family and for all of the young people who will never get to experience his influence and guidance. With deepest sympathy.

I never had the pleasure of meeting the coach although I worked with Matt&Carrie and heard the greatest stories.

Godspeed Classmate! You sure got a lot done in the short time you were here, most importantly making this a better place for all the lives you touched.

So many childhood memories, Bill could play them all, baseball, football, basketball. Then our paths crossed again in a few years later in New London, Ct. It was so good to see a familiar face so far from home. Good memories of a great guy. My deepest Sympathy to the Schmitz family.

The Keefe family would like to express our sympathy to the Schmitz family. It is so sad to lose someone so young. We enjoyed getting to know your family especially Bill and Matt during their time in East Lyme Babe Ruth, High School and St. Matthias Church. Bill was a great coach and certainly knew how to motivate young men. I will always remember the successful squeeze play Bill called with Matt scoring from 3rd to win the game. You were so genuine and heartfelt when you called wishing Beth and I the best after my son was born a few months ago. I was unsure about you when we first met. You were gruff and focused on football. I can't tell you how much you meant to me these past few years at Land O Lakes. Your morning greetings brightened up my day. Our chats about everything from sports and current events to life lessons via your wonderful stories were entertaining and enlightening. With a simple pat on the back and a few words, you could ease the most troubled mind. I am honored to have known a man who has influenced so many, and can only hope to do some of the good that you have done in life. Thank you.
