Gregory John Petro

Lafayette - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette for Gregory John Petro, 50, who passed from life peacefully on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at his residence in Lafayette. His beloved wife of 24 years, Laurie Beard Petro, was with him.

Interment will follow in Fountain Memorial Cemetery in Lafayette.

Rev. Ftr. Gilbert J. Dutel of St. Edmond Catholic Church will officiate.

Gregory was born Friday, October 5, 1962 in Lafayette and was a lifetime resident of Acadiana. His hobbies included fishing, antiquing, cooking, especially with his brother at Fat Albert's, their family owned business, and helping others. In fact, Greg never met a stranger and never could say no if someone needed his help. He especially loved his family of which there are many. He was a loving and supportive husband, brother, uncle and friend and will be deeply missed.

Mr. Petro is survived by his beloved wife, Laurie Beard Petro of Lafayette; his father, Joseph S. Petro, Jr. and his step-mother, Edrea; four brothers, Joe Petro and wife Connie, Paul Petro and wife Belle, Kenny Petro and wife Brenda and George Petro and wife Patti; four sisters, Cynthia Frisby and husband Ronnie, Mary Kidder and husband Ronald, Freda Talbot, and Sylvia Tongate and husband Jackie; his step mother-in-law, Dona Beard; his brothers-in-law, James Beard, Patrick Beard and wife Bonnie, Van Beard and wife Lisa; two step-brothers, Jon and wife Yvonne and Glenn and wife Roanna; his step-sister, Robyn Rhodes and numerous dear nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sylvia Ashy Petro, his father-in-law, Harold Charles Beard, his mother-in-law, Anne Adele Beard, his brother-in-law, Roger Talbot, his sister-in-law, Cathy Beard and his nephews, Jason Petro and Stephen Beard.

Visitation will be observed at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette on Friday, February 8, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and resumes Saturday, February 9 at 10:00 a.m. until time of services.

A rosary will be recited Friday, February 8, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fountain Memorial Funeral Home chapel.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Petro III, George Petro, Joshua Talbot, Colby Kidder, Trevor Kidder and TJ Delhomme.

Honorary Bearers are Paul Petro, Ken Petro, Jimmy Beard, Van Beard, Dane Boudreaux and Jimmy Simon.

I used to be close friends with one of his workers and Mr. Greg was a nice man. That friend came due on his part of the rent and he asked Mr. Greg for the money. Without hesitation, he gave it to him. That was sweet. I only saw him a couple of times and on both occasions, he was polite and cordial. RIP and my heart goes out to the family and friends.

To the Petro Family, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Greg. The Petro Family and our family grew up together....always running the streets and enjoying life...what memories..Mr. and Mrs. Petro were the coolest parents around..and we all knew it!! Greg will be missed here on earth, but he is reunited in his mother's loving arms. Sympathy and Prayers are with you all during this most difficult time.

I am so sad to hear of Greg's passing. My heartfelt sympathy to his wife, Laura and the entire Beard and Petro families. I grew up in the neighborhood and have wonderful memories of playing at the Petro house often with Sylvia. I remember Greg as being quiet and kind and pretty tolerant of me and Sylvia hanging around. I got my first job at Fat Alberts and I still would drive over to the Northside store and visit with Greg and Joe (and get my fix of chicken & rice dressing).Greg was always a very kind person--we will miss him.
