SMART, Russel Sutherland, QC
Passed away peacefully at home, Ottawa, July 22, 2000, at age 79. Son of the late Russel and Emma Louise Smart (Stevenson) of Ottawa. Dearly loved by his wife of 53 years, Nancy (Henderson), dear father to Russel Jr. (Nancy), Timothy (deceased), Jennifer, Nonie; and grandchildren Emily, Penny and David; Ben and Sarah. He will be greatly missed also by nieces and nephews; D'Arcy Marsh (Victoria), Georgina Buxton (David), Christopher Barker (Hilary) and Rose (deceased), Tom Swabey (deceased) (Mary), John Swabey (deceased), Jill Johnson (Larry), Jeremy Stowell (Gwen) and Christopher Stowell (Gerry), and many grand nieces and nephews. Great friend to sister-in-law Judy Minty and her husband Jack and family; and also brother-in-law Hartley (deceased) and Irma Henderson and family; and step-sister Mrs. Edith Meisner (Stevenson). Predeceased by sisters Helen Stowell, Elizabeth Smart and Jane Marsh Beveridge. Russel was a graduate of Ridley College, the University of Toronto (Engineering) and Osgoode Hall Law School. From 1941-1945 he served as Lieut. in the 1st Light Anti-Aircraft Battery followed by a distinguished career in the practice of Patent, Copyright and Trademarks and Patent Agency law in Ottawa with Smart and Biggar; Fetherstonhaugh & Co. for many years senior partner and counsel to the Firm. He was Past President of the Canadian Patent Institute, The Canadian Club, and a member of the Carleton County Law Association for 50 years. He was co-founder of the Roberts Smart Center, for youth treatment at the Royal Ottawa Hospital. Those who knew Russel will also remember him as a life long enthusiastic supporter, visionary and participant in outdoor life. He enjoyed golf from his earliest childhood days; initially caddying at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club later to become Club Champion in 1947 as well as a lifetime member. He was a passionate skier throughout his life also serving on the Boards of the Canadian Ski Association, the International Ski Federation and Canadian Ski Museum. He had a strong interest in the development of the Mt. Ste. Marie ski area and also the ski jumping program at Camp Fortune. In the summer months he enjoyed fly fishing at the Maganassippi Fish and Game Club of which he was a longtime member. Family and friends have enjoyed with him many years of skiing, fishing, golf and merrymaking in the Ottawa Valley and beyond. In his memory, friends are respectfully requested to make a donation to the charity of their choice in lieu of flowers. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa, Ontario on Wednesday, July 26, 2000 from 3-7 p.m. Funeral Service in the Chapel on Thursday, July 27 at 2 p.m. Private cremation to follow.
