JUDITH HUNTER Obituary

JUDITH HUNTER (nee CUNNINGHAM) Died September 25, 2015 in her 82nd year, at home after a long illness, surrounded by family. She leaves Martin, her husband of 57 years, children Sarah (Douglas), Ben and Guy (Andrea), foster daughter Lavina, granddaughter Eleanor Hart and grandsons Sam and Callan, step-granddaughters Rebekah and Naomi, her brother Jamie and various nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her sister Alison earlier this year. Judith was a kind and insightful person and a wonderful storyteller who had an uncanny instinct for putting people at ease. She had a keen interest in the arts, particularly music and theatre, singing and acting in her teens and early twenties. She devoted her mature years to young children, teaching kindergarten, primarily in the inner city, for over twenty-five years. She did much to help underprivileged kids, encourage their interest in the arts and champion them against sometimes unsympathetic and abusive parents. In her later years she took a strong interest in conservation, especially projects involving wild animals and endangered species. The family will receive friends between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 1st at Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home & Chapel, 467 Sherbourne Street, south of Wellesley. A memorial service will be held at Rosedale United Church, 159 Roxborough Drive at Glen Road, on Saturday, October 3rd at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to SickKids Foundation or the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The family would like to express their appreciation to her many caregivers, particularly Amy, Alexis and Kathy, Kumba, Zed and James.

I'm quite certain that for me the derivation of the word elegance' can be traced directly to Judith. I would have been learning to speak about the time Judith the teenager floated among the gods and goddesses of the beach at Marshall's Bay. I would have heard from my aunts and various others that Judith Cunningham was lovely, charming, intelligent and all the rest. But from all I heard and beheld, what seems to have made the deepest impression was the natural elegance emanating everywhere from the girl you fell so joyfully in love with. I am grateful it was Judith who defined the word for me - throughout her life; it's thanks to her I have a deep appreciation and understanding of its meaning. My very best to you dear Martin, at this time, and always; and to your family.

I have been in awe of Judy since our high school days at Havergal.
She was always asked to read out her essays as they were filled with wit and clever writing! How I did envy her talent.
Our paths continued at Trinity and her talent was a shining light for the Lit Society.
Judy was a kind, warm and thoughtful human being and filled with love for all mankind.
We will all miss you Judy!
Martin, please accept my deepest sympathies. You and your family will be in my prayers.
