Billy NESTEROFF Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Nov. 9 to Nov. 10, 2016.

Billy G. Nesteroff
It is with profound sadness and disbelief that the family of Billy Gerald Nesteroff announces his passing on November 8, 2016 at the age of 64. Billy leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth "Betty Ann"; his children, Joelle (Calvin) Krysak and Corey (Kim) Nesteroff; and his precious grandchildren, Zakary, Rhett, Benjamin and Sophia.
Dad was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on December 9, 1951 to William and Eva Nesteroff. He grew up on the family farm in Blaine Lake and developed a love of the land that remained with him until the day of his passing.
Dad was a man of strong values and strong opinions who had unconditional love for his family. His world revolved around his wife, Betty Ann. They spent many wonderful years traveling together to Radium to golf together. They tended a beautiful garden together, watched their children and grandchildren grow together, and every day they would find time to play a game of crib together. Dad often said he did not know what he would do without Mom by his side.
Dad was very proud of the accomplishments of his children, Joelle and Corey. He spent many years coaching them in various sports when they were younger and was very proud of the careers they chose when they got older. Dad was overjoyed when Joelle married Calvin and Corey married Kim and welcomed them to the family with open arms.
Dad's pride and joy were his grandchildren and he had special nicknames for each, Zakary "Alexei", Rhett "Rhadousha", Benjamin "Benji" and Baby Sophia "Petunia". He spent every moment he could with his grandkids and loved when they would come to Blaine Lake to spend time with him and Baba. He loved to tease them and play with them. Dad loved watching Zak and Rhett play baseball, football and hockey and traveled around Saskatchewan watching them play sports. He was there watching them play in their final football games only days before his passing. He loved his special time with his little Benji and was ecstatic when his baby granddaughter Sophia was born. His grandchildren meant everything to him and they will miss the huge presence that their Deda had in their lives.
Dad was very proud of his Doukhobor faith and loved singing in the Doukhobor choir. His beautiful tenor voice could often be heard breaking out in song as he sang one of his favorite hymns. Dad passed on his strong belief in his faith to his children and grandchildren while celebrating Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and St. Peter's Day. He loved it when his children and grandchildren attended prayers at the Prayer Home with him. Dad was very proud that he was a member of the Doukhobor Choir that recorded a traditional Sabranya for future generations last month.
Dad was also a sports fanatic and loved watching his favorite teams, the New York Yankees, the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Blackhawks. He would often call his grandsons to tease them about cheering for the "Magpies" when they would play his Yankees. He loved watching sports with his son, Corey, and son-in-law, Calvin. This is a special bond that will be treasured by them forever.
Dad loved to tell jokes and tease others. He lived life to the fullest. His only regrets would be that he is leaving his soul mate, Betty Ann, and his children behind, and that he will not be around to watch his grandchildren grow. But his spirit will always be with us and the memories that we have of him will remain in our hearts forever.
Dad also leaves behind his sisters, Elaine Cunningham, Linda Nesteroff, Lily (Wayne) Braunberger; brother, Kenny Nesteroff; nephew, Jon (Judy) Telehanic (children Zachary and Gabriella); niece, Kristy (Craig) Keeping (children Peyton and Mya); sisters-in-law, Joan (Greg) Mrazek, Alice Dumba; brother-in-law, Al (Cindy) Dumba; nephews, Kyle and Jamie Mrazek, Jared Dumba; and niece, Cassie (Derek) Dodd (children Blaike and Mack). He will also be missed by his cousins and Aunt and Uncle in British Columbia, as well as many special friends. A Prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 11, 2016 at the chapel of the funeral home. The funeral will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 12 at the Chapel of the Saskatoon Funeral Home. Jeanette Stringer, Elder from the Saskatoon Doukhobor Society will be officiating. Donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers. Condolences may be left at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to the SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME, 306-244-5577.

Dear Betty Ann, Joelle, Corey, family and friends:
My deepest condolences on the passing of your beloved one! When someone we love so dearly passes on we try to make sense and deal with the emotions that are left in their absence. Take comfort in knowing that you are not really alone and that the love that you all shared will guide you through these difficult days, weeks, months and years ahead. I remember Bill with fondness as I do all of you and know that you will all have so many wonderful and cherished memories to get you through your most difficult times. Keep the faith that no matter where you are or what your doing you have your very own Angel watching over you!

Dear Betty Ann, Joelle, Corey - I am so sorry for your loss and my deepest condolences are with you and the entire family. Bill was always such a strong presence and he will be missed by so many. I feel sincerely privileged to have been able to spend some time with him over the past few months through his participation in the Doukhobor Prayer Service Preservation Project and was truly honoured by his steadfast support for our efforts to preserve our heritage and traditions. I hope through our work on the project we will be able to ensure that part of his legacy lives on for future generations. My prayers are with you and please accept my deepest sympathies.

I would like to offer my sincere condolences to Bill Nesteroff's family and friends. I was shocked and so very sorry to hear of his passing. I only just met Bill a few months ago as we met for practices and for filming as part of the Doukhobor Prayer Service Preservation Project. I was very touched by his warmth and enthusiasm for the project: his support for the project, and his encouragement to me as a researcher associated with it, were a great help as we anticipated the filming of the moleniye on October 22nd, 2016. We are ever so grateful that he was able to participate in that event: we are so glad that his voice and his energy will be memorialized forever more on the recordings we collected that day. Bill was also very enthusiastic about completing an interview with us as part of the DPSPP. In fact, I would have been interviewing him this week. It breaks my heart that we won't be doing that interview after all - I would have loved to have the opportunity to get to know him better, to collect his insights for the project, and to create a valuable record for his family and for our community. His passing reminds me of the importance of valuing the precious time we do have with one another. All the best to his family as they cope in the days and months ahead. .

Dear Betty Ann, Joelle, Corey and Family There is little one can say to ease the grief you carry in your broken hearts today. As time passes though, your hearts will slowly mend as you reflect back on the many memories and moments you shared as a family. The memories that you gathered over the years will be imprinted in your hearts forever. Bill was so very proud of his Doukhobor heritage and contributed immensely to the Doukhobor Preservation Prayer Service Project that was filmed only three weeks ago. He has left a wonderful legacy to share with the generations that follow. We will miss his big personality, wonderful sense of humor and his powerful singing voice. I heard Bill sing this year at the Saskatoon Prayer Home and complimented him on his beautiful tenor voice which will now be recorded for posterity through the "Malanya Project",recently filmed. What a good thing to honor his memory!
I met Bill when I would visit my Baba and Deda in BLaine Lake during my teens.I remember playing kaiser as a partner and opponent with BIll at the regular weekend "farm Parties" and was amazed at his high bidding skills on virtually a nothing hand. The thing is that often he and his partner(me or someone else) would make it!! He was quite the kaiser player! Lots of fun always!
COndolences to his family and be assured he is somewhere playing a no holds barred kaiser game with a break for a few lines from a Doukhobor song.
