John has crossed my mind many times in the past 40 years and I always smiled but due to life I never Googled. Until now. Instead of smiling I´m in shock, sad and mad at myself for not trying before now. I actually met John when he drove for Yellow Cab in Pittsburgh and he picked me up from work late night/early morning after I worked a wedding at The Top of the Triangle. I had taken many cabs before then but never had a driver get out and open the door for me. Maybe he was watching me walk slowly down those stairs at the Steel Building from double-shift exhaustion, needed to stretch his legs or was just simply an extremely nice human. As he pulled out of 600 Grant Street I was both thinking of how nice it was that he had just done that and that I was starving. As I was trying to remember if I had eaten anything since my usual toast once I got to work every morning he said "Hey. Are you hungry?" "I´m starving you literally just read my mind" and within a few minutes he pulled into Ritter´s Diner and that was that. I not only got a free cab ride, but a free hours long meal and great conversation. He then did indeed continue my ride home and that was that. As I was getting out I jokingly said "tell your dispatcher to ask you first every time I call because it will save me a lot of money". I guess he did indeed because if I called I would start walking down the steps, see him get out to open my door and it would put an instant smile on my face. We then became close, hanging out - from him taking me to his local Co-Op (never heard of such a thing until then but joined that day because as it turned out I didn´t live far from him), had numerous conversations about architecture for obvious reasons and no matter what we laughed. A lot. When I moved to Boston he would write me letters and I would write back. Until I didn´t. Because again "life got in the way". Oh, how sorry I am now. The few memories I just shared don´t put a patch on the impact you made on my life Mr. Faber. Save me a seat at the diner and order me some fries with gravy. I´m in.
