Not sure what to say?

January 1, 2012

Paul and his friend John shared rides with us to school at Minnehaha Academy. He was a polite, unassuming young athlete.
My husband and I graduated from Minnehaha, and went on into medicine and dental hygiene here in Seattle.
We were so surprised to hear of his death, printed in World Magazine. And now we look forward to hearing of the contributions he has made through the years since our chance encounter.
May God be very near to your family during the days ahead, comforting your hearts.

Sincerely, Evan and Gloria (Hansemann) Otteson Mercer Island ,Washington

To the family of Rev Youngdahl,

I am a former member and have fond memories of Mount Olivet and Rev Youngdahl. His reassuring voice during services, his distinctively strong presence as a servant of God. He officiated my husband's funeral eleven years ago and was especially comforting to myself and my daughter.

I am sorry for you loss of husband, father and an icon and leader, if you permit to say, of Mount Olivet. I am sure he is missed in many ways, in many places, and by many many people.

I'm extremely saddened to hear of Pastor Youngdahl's passing. I was away working at a Christian summer camp at the time of his passing and didn't find out until just this week. My prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends, as well as the rest of the Mount Olivet congregation. I have such fond memories of him from when I was confirmed and attending Hi-League. I will never forget him. Know that he is safe with Jesus. God bless you all.

Dear Nancy,
Paul touched the lives of many people in the Twin Cities and even non-members. He allowed our four children to attend COP and experience the North Woods. They absolutely loved the whole adventure Paul, Kristi and of course you had planned for their week of fun. My wife and I will never forget you and Paul.

Love and prayers,

Dear Nancy, immediate and extended family,
It's been 40 days since the passing of your loved one and our dear friend, Pastor--- we loved him so much ...every day he's in our thoughts as are all of you...we continue our prayers for your peace as you press forward without him. His personal presence in our lives for 30+ years of being a Mount Olivet member has meant more than you know. Now Living Water in
Scottsdale, Arizona is our amazing little church away from home--we are soooooo lucky and blessed to have it--inspired by Pastor right after we moved there in 1999 ---pushing us to help in every way we could--today it's a full fledged ELCA church -- we honestly don't know what we would do without it. It takes a village of dedicated people to bulld a church-- What must it hsave taken to build this amazing place, Mount Olivet? Only when one moves away like we have, do you truly realize the specialness of this place. Thank you Pastor Paul for your astounding leadership and vision and ALL of you in the Youngdahl family---you inspire us to carry on your loved ones legacy. We thank you for sharing this special man with so many. Much love,
Jan and DJ Johnson

To the Youngdahl Family,
My parents, brother Scott and myself have been members all of our lives. I remember Camp, Church Choir, Hi-League. We always had fun. I want to say "Thank You for all the wonderful years". I know that Paster Youngdahl is still among us. He is in the breeze of the wind as it blows; he is in the warmth of the suns rays as it shines; he is in the drops of rain as it refreshes the land; and he is in the first through the last snow flake that falls in the winter. He was a great man and he will be missed. Love to all of you and yours. Take Care and God Bless.

I first met Pastor Paul when he came to Hartford Conn. to do his internship at Emanuel Lutheran in Hartford. The pastor of that church asked my Dad, a recent widower, if he would be able to have Paul live in his home that year as I was in the process of moving to California to do a dietetic internship. Paul moved into my bedroom and I moved to California where I have been since. My Dad and the rest of our family in Conn. had a wonderful year with Paul as a part of their family. I will always be grateful to Paul for being with my Dad that year. He also enjoyed the times when Nancy came to visit. My Dad remarried in June of 1962 and for their honeymoon they drove out to attend Nancy & Paul's wedding. My sympathy to Nancy and Paul's family.

The Youngdahl family has been an integral part of my family's life since my parents joined Mt Olivet in 1952. My brothers and I were all a part of COP and then our children were able to attend. What a loss - not only to Mt Olivet but to the many who loved Pastor Paul. He is in God's hands now and riding the orange scooter to greet all of us when we arrive. God bless you all.

My parents joined Mount Olivet in the 40's. I was teaching Sunday school when we heard the news of Ruben Youngdahl's passing- we all were in tears. Pastor Paul married my husband and I in 1974. We moved to Texas. When I would go back and visit- Pastor Paul would ask- "Are you still married?" I answered yes- and he would say, "I did a good job." Pastor Eric did the service for my 94 year old mother. She kept a scrapbook of Mount Olivet which I gave to Pastor Eric. We have been through 3 generations of Youngdahls. I am crushed at the loss, and am forever grateful that we have been blessed by the care of the Youngdahls. My mom, I am sure will thrilled to know she passed away the same year that Pastor Paul did. We will hold your family in our hearts forever. It was so comforting to watch the service online.

We were blessed to have Pastor Youngdahl marry us in 1996 and have been long-time fans of his sermons. He would always greet us like friends when we'd see him walking down the hall. My husband is a golf pro and he and Pastor had a lot to talk about. We will miss him!

July 14, 2011

We used to live next door to the Youngdahl family back in the 50's and enjoyed knowing them. We watched them devote their lives to Mount Olivet way after they left that neighborhood. Even though we didn't share the same religion we admired their love for God and their passion for their vocation.
God bless all the family and our prayers are with you at their time.

I never had the pleasure or honor to attend Mt. Olivet and hear pastor Youngdahl. But I heard success stories about Mt. Olivet from Lutheran pastors, and my friend Pastor Jack Richards was an intern there many years ago. The Lutheran church has lost a great Pastor and leader. I watched the entire memorial service and especially enjoyed the tribute of Kristy Youngdahl. He will be missed and difficult to replace.

Pastor Paul Youngdahl was a great boss and a dear friend. He was so supportive of his staff and of the music department. I miss him very much, but am thankful for his on-going spirit and legacy which lives on through Mt Olivet Ministries. It was certainly my pleasure to serve as principal organist at Mt Olivet under pastor Youngdahl. It was also an honor to be invited back to play for his memorial. I miss you Pastor!!! All my love to the Youngdahl/Mt Olivet family... the monks of St. John's are keeping you all in prayer!

My heartfelt sympathy to Pastor Youngdahl's family. My connection with Mt. Olivet goes back many decades. I remember how my Grandmother Peterson used to coorespond with Pastor Rueben and how much I looked forward to listening to his "Live for Today" broadcast every day back in Minneapolis. When my daughter was an infant we would goe to service, and felt especially blessed when Pastor Paul spoke. He was a very special gift to us all and we need to remember his warmth, compassion and devotion to the youth ministry. I have lived away from Minneapolis for many years now but each time I would visit Sunday service at Mt. Olivet was on my agenda. Peace be with you all.

It will be very different at Mount Olivet without Pastor Youngdahl. Our family was so sad to hear the news. I am so grateful that Pastor Youngdahl asked us to give a bit more of ourselves than we might have planned. Our service to the church has been very rewarding. We will continue.

Thanks Pastor, we will really miss you.

Pastor Paul and I were partners in a HIGHLY competitive golf match against Bishop Howie Wennes and Pastor Tim Selbo, of Living Water Lutheran, here in Scottsdale. Pastor Paul and I won $4 a piece. After our match, I celebrated with a cheeseburger and fries. I was a little taken aback when Pastor Paul helped himself to most of my french fries. Question: "How do you say no, to Pastor Paul Youngdahl ?".

Here's a man of distinction, one who we will all remember and miss. I'm a better person for having known this giant of a man. Rest in Peace, Pastor Paul, on a job well done.

Dear Nancy & Family:

I believe that many of us took for granted Paul's capabilities, talent and love for his congregation. Now that we have lost his physical presence, we are reminded of just how special he truely was ! We will miss the comfort of knowing he was always in command, and directing us , although subtley, towards God.

I will miss seeing pastor at church. my family have been members for over 70 years and I even got a job working as a part time receptionist 11 years ago. I will always remember pastors warm hello and that wonderful smile and eye contact, he always made me feel special. My youngest of my 5 children, Cole who attended The Way last year and was at the youth center and gym alot on Wednesday nites, said he will miss tossing the football in the parking lot with pastor and he always ruffled his hair. He said, pastor had a great arm mom. Pastor had a way of making us all feel welcomed and special in such a large church, he will be missed. Our condolences. We also want to thank you for a beautiful memorial service and celebration of an amazing life. Nowhere else can you feel like a big part of a small family while surrounded by so many. Paul touched our lives in truly unique and special ways even when you didn't realize it. Each of those thoughts bring smiles, comfort and not too few chuckles. Thank you for sharing Paul with all of us, and letting us all share in his warmth and grace. He truly was, and continues to be, a rare, special friend.

I'll miss Paul poking me in the shoulder every Sunday as he walked by when we choir members stood in the hallway waiting to enter the narthex. I'll miss his confident, assured voice when he would call me by name. I loved Paul Youngdahl. And I know he loved me because he loved everyone -- he truly lived his life as our Lord has commanded: to love one another. His life spoke such a simple message, the message of God's love.

To the entire Youngdahl Family, our thoughts are with you. Your husband, dad, brother...an amazing soul who was using every gift God gave him day in and day out. As I have grown up at MO, I have been inspired for years by his sermons, providing specific direction each week to go forward and serve God.

Upon hearing of Pastor's passing, my 12 year old said 'Mom, camp won't be the same'. I feel so blessed to have grown up at MO, gone to COP for years myself and now my kids are loving MO/COP and PY just as much.

We have all been blessed for having the master Pastor in our lives!

Sheila Scott

June 24, 2011

Dear Nancy, Kristi, Aaron and Peter:

My prayers and heart go out to you at this very sad time.

My first memories of PY was him raking the yard in his Washburn letter jacket. I thought that was so cool. I was just a kid, but that bolstered my intentions to go to Washburn. I also thought it was cool that such an important man would be raking his own leaves.

I was a COP camper.... some of the best memories of my life. That is where I learned that PY and I shared the same birthday!

Later, my friends involved me in all of the High League activities, and I babysat for you kids.

Paul Youngdahl had an impact on so many of us, whether we were part of the congregation or not. He is one of the great people who shaped our lives and our community.

Thank you PY for everything. Love to the family.

You married us, baptized our children and gave us pre-marital advice that shaped our lives and marriage for the best. We thank you for your service and leadership. May God bless your family and you in your life with God forever.

An amazing man that touched so many lives and was so genuine in doing it. I spent many summers attending C.O.P. We were not church members, but my parents would drive me the 2 hours to Minneapolis to stand in line in the wee hours of the morning to register for camp. Pastor Youngdahl was such a kind man, you could tell he truly cared about all of us and loved being up there. You will be dearly missed Pastor.

I am sad to hear the news of Pastor Youngdahl's passing but so blessed that he and Mount Olivet were a big part of my wife's and my sppiritual life. As we now reside in Kansas City, we foundly remember our time as members and our marriage at Mount Olivet. Pastor Youngdalh's presence was bigger than life and as a towering figure as he taught us how God and Jesus Christ was our light and salvation. Rest well you servant of God, teacher of men, counselor of children. Well done ...Well done.

As was said so many times today during the memorial services, Pastor Youngdahl touched the lives of so many people in so many personal, astonishing ways. I am saddened greatly by his death, but I know in my heart that my life has been blessed for knowing Pastor Youngdahl - as a Pastor, a mentor, a personal hero, and as a great friend I could always rely on, and trust. Thank you, Youngdahl family, for sharing him with me, and with so many others.

June 24, 2011

This is cousin Tom Anderson in Santa Fe. I am so saddened by the loss of Paul. We loved him so much. He was a hero for all of us in so many ways. A preaching appointment this Sunday here in Santa Fe means that I could not attend the funeral and embrace so many family and friends alike. Mount Olivet has contributed so greatly to the health and well being of countless souls around the world. Paul was a huge part of that legacy. He will be so missed by the many who loved and cherished his life and faith. Nancy and the kids--a huge hug from me. I hope to see you later this autumn. Susan and Terry--I can't believe this has happened. I am still shocked by it all and wish I could see you both and your kids and talk about Paul into the wee hours of the morning. Steven--how sad to see your brother go. It can't be true. Yet, it is. We are mourners and can only walk in faith. I thank you for your pastoral leadership and your great faith. I wish I could see you and share this in person. I feel thousands of miles away and yet strangely very close to you all. All my love and blessings--Pr. Tom and Diane Anderson, Santa Fe, NM

Our heartfelt sympathies to the Youngdahl family. I sang in the choir for 5 years under Reuben Youngdahl - Attended Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in St. Paul when Paul ministered there - Paul baptized my daughter - He married my husband and I - he officiated at our other daughter's and son's weddings. He also was very instrumental in assisting my daughter's entry to Gustavus where she graduated from - He's been a stalwart mainstay in the Crawford family and whenever possible, we would drive from wherever we lived to attend either the Christmas or Easter services at Mt. Olivet. He always remembered us with a wink and a warm smile. He truly will be missed!

My condolences to all the Youngdahl family and the staff of Mt. Olivet. It was such a shock to hear the news of Pastor Paul's death. I will always remember the videos of Pastor Paul with the campers and how all the children loved him. Also, naming all the members of the confirmation class by name in prayer always impressed me. There has been no Church that I have attended since that time that was the same or as vibrant. That is to be expected, but it also shows the remarkable legacy that Pastor Youngdahl leaves for Mount Olivet. I guess I was spoiled and thought there were other Lutheran Churches around the country that had as many active members. I will miss him.

The last time I was with Uncle Paul I laughed so hard - he was sitting on the porch of his cabin at camp waiting to greet the incoming buses of campers AND he was tanning! So many things to miss about him! My deepest sympathy to you: Nancy, Kristi, Peter, Aaron, Heidi, Luke, Olivia and Elsa AND to your church family. What a wonderful legacy and body of inspired believers he has left.

When my father died, Pastor P met us in the parking lot. At 6 feet plus he went to surround us with an embrace and totally missed my 5 foot height. We laughed and cried. Never will forget the wonderful moment!

I will forever miss running into Pastor Youngdahl in the halways, there was never a mistake as to who he was. I know when my daughter now 20 was camp age she couldn't wait for COP and she always had a story about PY as she called him. I know the first time she got to have a ride in his boat at camp was a lifelong highlight. I am saddened my three young children will never get to know him. I was lucky enough to have him baptize my son Paul, of which he loved the name!! My deepest sympathies to his family.

Watched service online from Montana. So many COP memories, the mail call especially! He and RKY were loving presences in my family's lives, as he was in so many.

We are blessed to know that our children experienced the love and grace of God through Pastor. What a gift this man was and we are grateful that the Youngdahl family shared him with all of us so openly. To Luke and Olivia, whom I had the pleasure of having in my Sunday School class, I'm so sorry about your Papa. He loved you so very much. God bless all of you.

I have known PY since I was a teenager and worked for him in my early twenties. My journal is full of incomplete letters and notes of thanks, praise, and respect; I intended to transfer them into a letter during my vacation this summer… but now .... This week at work our management announced an award to a colleague... I was struck by how wonderful it is that our management sponsored a formal mthod to tell each other how about our mutual appreciatation and respect. I wrote the following to help me process my grief for PY and to encourage myself to Not Wait; because we will rarely find the right time or method to express how much we enjoy, appreciate, and respect our family, friends, and colleagues.

Don’t Wait
We are left with piles of papers, bills, and uncompleted projects. These can overwhelm and cause anger and anxiety; but the piles can wait.
We are left with closets and drawers full of memories, favorites, and familiar smells. These can overwhelm and cause tears of fear, frustration, and grief; but the closets and drawers can wait.
We are left with unspoken words of love, gratitude, praise, and forgiveness. These can overwhelm and cause guilt and remorse; but can they wait? No! For all those who are with us now, tell them how you feel, how much you love, appreciate, and respect. For all those who are with us now, tell them that you forgive, or ask for their forgiveness. For all those who are with us now… don’t wait.

Our deepest sympathies to the Youngdahl family and those feeling the loss of our Pastor and his great leadership in the ministry of God to all who came in contact with him. We feel privilaged to be a part of worship lead by Pastor Youngdahl that revitalized us and all who came to listen and went away anxious to spread the gospel in whatever capacity possible. He will be greatly missed.

Pastor Youngdahl was a great man who affected and changed the lives of many. For many, he is the face of not only Mount Olivet, but also Cathedral of the Pines camp. His memory will live on forever but he will always be missed.

I have very fond memories of Mt. Olivet and pastor Youngdahl. In reading about his death, I found out he was at a place for which I have even fonder memories, Cathedral of the Pines, when he fell ill. I was sad that there was not a camp such as this for my kids when they were growing up. But then again, COP is a hard act to follow. I went to school with Kristi who was in my grade at Burroughs. My thoughts and prayers are with the Youngdahl family and the Mt. Olivet family. Great church, great pastor. Have not found one to match since leaving Mpls. Tempted to hop on a plane for the 3:00 service….

On the bus getting ready to leave Cathedral of the Pines singing:

‘No I don’t wanna go home, I’m havin’ a wonderful time. They say there is no place like home, but this place is divine. So send me the rest of my clothes, no longer will I roam. You can always hear me singin’ this song, no I don’t wanna go, no I don’t wanna go, no I don’t wanna go home!’

What great memories….

My first memory of Pastor Youngdahl was as a teenager when I decided that I wanted to join Mount Olivet. My father, Forrest Schoeller, came with me to the tour and informational meeting to support me. From that moment my parents knew that they too wanted to be part of this amazing ministry. Mount Olivet has been a blessing in our lives and now the lives of my daughters, Megan and Molly, who worship at the West Campus now. We have Pastor Youngdahl to thank for his leadership and passion for the church! He is a blessing in so many lives and will live on in our hearts forever...

Dear Youngdahl Family,
When my husband and I came to Mount Olivet just over two years ago we felt that we had found home. I sat listening to Pastor Youngdahl and a comfort came over me, I had not felt since I was a child. Since then I have taught Sunday School and and will continue to care for this new home, that your family has created for my family. Thank you for sharing Pastor Youngdahl in his life, and in his passing today. My heart is with you during this time. Thank you everyone at Mount Olivet for giving our family a place to worship the Lord and be part of such a wonderful Church Family,

God Bless
