JAMES POWERS Obituary

POWERS Dr. JAMES SCOTT POWERS (Age 68) Of Bethesda, Maryland passed away on May 20, 2014. Dr. Powers was born in Brevard, North Carolina on October 2, 1945, to the late Linna Heath and James Bascom Powers. Dr. Powers graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC, in 1961. He then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, obtaining his undergraduate degree in 1965, and his Medical Doctorate in 1969. He joined the United States Army in 1969, entering an Army medical internship at the Letterman Medical Center in San Francisco from 1969 to 1970. Dr. Powers completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado from 1970 to 1973, followed by a fellowship between 1973 and 1976. In 1976, Dr. Powers relocated to the Washington, DC area. He later joined the practice of Burnett & Magovern in Chevy Chase, MD. In 1981, he opened his own practice, and in 1988 he was joined in that practice by Dr. Francis T. Bergin. Dr. Powers joined the staff at Sibley Memorial Hospital in 1977. He was a dedicated member of the Sibley community, serving on several committees and as Chairman of the Credentials Committee, and Vice Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2008, Dr. Powers was elected President of the Medical Staff at Sibley, and in that role was a member of the Sibley Board. Additionally, Dr. Powers in 2008 became a Trustee of the Sibley Memorial Hospital Foundation. Dr. Powers was well-loved and respected by his peers and patients alike. He was named as a Washingtonian Magazine "Top Doctor" numerous times, and delivered almost 2,500 babies over the duration of his career. He later began to specialize in gynecological surgery and preventive care. Perhaps most important of all of Dr. Powers' accomplishments was the care he brought to his many patients and the differences he made in their lives. He cherished the opportunity to bring his skills and gifts to bear on the many lives he touched. Dr. Powers is survived by his wife, Joan Draper, a former Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia; his children, Laura Shumaker of Akron, OH, Rebecca Harrigan of Atlanta, GA, Jennifer Powers of Silver Spring, MD, Jocelyn Powers of Purcellville, VA, Emily Powers of Washington, DC and Marsden Hanna of Washington, DC; as well as his seven grandchildren, Tierney, Molly, Sam, Emma, Will, Grace and Harper; his mother, Julia Powers Beasley of Raleigh, NC; brother, John W. Powers of Raleigh, NC; sister, Deborah Dickens of Rocky Mount, NC; his four sons-in-law, and six nieces and nephews. Dr. Powers was an ever-caring husband, father, grandfather and physician. He was dearly loved by his family and admired by his many friends and colleagues. He will be sorely missed. Friends will be received at PUMPHREY'S BETHESDA-CHEVY CHASE FUNERAL HOME, 7557 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, MD on Thursday, May 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 4700 Whitehaven Parkway, NW, Washington, DC 20007 on Saturday, May 31 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Sibley Memorial Hospital Foundation, with a specific designation for gynecological cancer research. Dear Mrs. Powers and Family,

I have been Dr. Powers patient for the past 17 years and I will miss him dearly. Although our hearts are heavy because we've lost his physical presence, time is a great healer and we will find comfort by keeping his memory close and finding the courage and strength to continue living a purposeful life. I believe he would want us to do that.
