Sarah McClendon Obituary

SARAH NEWCOMB McCLENDON

On January 8, 2003. Born in Tyler, TX, July 8, 1910, descendant of Mayflower passengers and Revolutionary War soldiers. University of Missouri journalism graduate and Texas reporter, she joined the World War II Women's Army Corps, who brought her to the Pentagon to the new WAC Information Office. She became a Washington reporter with official credentials in June 1944, covering Congress, the Pentagon and White House (12 Presidents) to the present, to be the longest-serving journalist, representing newspapers, TV and radio. She believed that with enough information, the American people would make the right decisions.

Dedicated to veterans, she had advisory appointments to the Veterans Administration, the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services and the World War II Memorial Committee, helping all, especially women and Vietnam Veterans.

She received excellent, loving care from the staff, at all levels, at the Washington DC Veterans' Hospital, for which her family is most grateful.

She leaves daughter, Sally MacDonald and her husband, David; granddaughter, Allison Scopelliti and her husband, Frank; great-granddaughter, Isabelle Angelica Scopelliti.

There will be two services, a Memorial Mass on Tuesday, January 14, 6:30 p.m. at St. Thomas Apostle Church, Woodley Road at 27th St. NW and a celebration of her life at the National Press Club, Saturday, January 25 at 11 a.m. to include "Sarah Stories". (She had been one of the first woman members and Vice-President of the Club.)

Instead of flowers, please send contributions to either the Sarah McClendon Scholarship Fund at the Missouri School of Journalism, 76D Gannett Hall, Columbia, MO 65211 (checks to Missouri School of Journalism) or to the Sarah McClendon House, established by the Veteran's Administration in her name to house homeless women veterans; checks should be made out to CHEP/Sarah McClendon House, Bldg. 82 - 1st fl., Perry Point, MD 21902.
