DEMETRIOU ANGELOS C. DEMETRIOU Angelos C. Demetriou, AIA, passed away on April 14, 2009, in Athens, Greece. Demetriou, who has lived in Washington, DC since 1963, was an architect, an urban designer, a city planner, and a painter. He was responsible for many projects in the United States, and Greece, Cyprus, Austria, and Oman. He was born on July 24,1929, in Larnaca, Cyprus. For 20 years he was the principal associate of the world-renowned city planner, Constantinos Doxiadis, where his work included large scaled projects including the design of Islamabad in Pakistan. In 1972, Demetriou launched his own practice, Angelos Demetriou & Associates, where he became well known for his ability to give shape and form to very large-scale projects. Some of his planning works included: solutions for Washington, DC''s Georgetown Waterfront, and the West End District; St. Mary''s County; Norfolk, and Wise Point, Virginia. He also provided planning for Peoria, Highland Park, Racine and Urbana, Illinois; Birmingham, Alabama; Wilmington, Delaware; Asbury Park, and Atlantic City, New Jersey; Bal Harbour, Florida; and a new town called " Vienna and a new town called "Vienna South", for the government of Austria. His architectural works include private residences, office buildings, hospitality and retail spaces, churches, and embassies. In 1983, Demetriou co-founded Architects International, with longtime colleague, Errol M. Adels, AIA, primarily operating in the Sultanate of Oman, His planning work continued in his home country--in Larnaca, Famagusta, and Nicosia, Cyprus, becoming an essential leader of Cyprus''s redevelopment. His work there to revitalize the downtown districts was recently honored by the city of Larnaca A downtown street will be named in his honor this year. In his last decade, although working only in an advisory role to Athens, some of his contributions include ideas and designs for adding a "ring road" and making several streets into pedestrian ways, and thus fostering the quality of city life. Demetriou''s passion for urban design is being carried on through a scholarship fund for Urban Design in his name, Angelos C. Demetriou, and is operated by the Fulbright Foundation in Greece. [email protected] Angelos Demetriou died just over two years after his beloved wife of 58 years, Eleni Demetriou. He is survived by his sister, Illiana Avraamides, his brother, Vasilios Demetriou; his children, Cosmas and Olvia Demetriou; their spouses, Robin Blaetz and Theodore Adamstein, respectively; his grandchildren, Michael and Stephanie Demetriou and Nicholas and Alexander Adamstein, and many, many friends and admirers.
