Gerald Murphy Obituary

Gerald G. Murphy, of Wellesley passed away peacefully on April 2, 2019. He was born in Cambridge on December 20, 1935 to Michael Murphy and Ellen (Foley) Murphy. Gerry was the husband of the late Jean (Peterson) Murphy and proud father of Stephen G. Murphy (Rebecca I. Lockwood) of Wellesley, and David L. Murphy (Denise H. Kung) of Town and Country, MO. He was the loving grandfather of Garrett R. Murphy (Alexander Riyadi) of Roslindale; Sarah I. Murphy (partner Ved Gund) of Ithaca, NY; Lily J. Murphy, and Jessica Murphy of Town and Country, MO and step-grandfather of Kody, Jacqueline, and Josie Ihnat, also of Town and Country, MO. He was grateful for the friendship and care from Aidan G. Basile. He was a dear friend of Jeanie and Brooks Goddard for more than 50 years. He adored his family and friends and cherished their love and care. Gerry was a faithful Red Sox fan who cheered players who donned the uniform over the years from his beloved Bobby Doerr to Xander Bogaerts. An enthusiastic Democrat, he was a proud delegate to the Massachusetts Democratic Party convention and active campaigner for candidates and causes. He rejoiced in both athletic and political triumphs and somehow endured the losses. A legendary teacher for 39 years, 36 at Wellesley Senior High School, he inspired and challenged his beloved students. Former students, colleagues and friends stayed in contact with him throughout his career and retirement sharing how his teaching and guidance positively impacted their lives. His advice and mentoring also helped student teachers from Boston University and Harvard College start careers in education. Gerrys reach and influence extended to Europe where he was headmaster of the The American School in Switzerlands (TASIS) campus in Thorpe, Surrey, UK in the 1983-4 academic year. Visitation will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., (Rt.16) WELLESLEY, Friday, April 5 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 6:00 - 8:00 pm. I am George MacNaughtn, WHS classof '65, forner student of American Hiatory by 'Mr.Murphy' (as he was called with some reverence then).

Eventually, I too taught American History for some years, off and on, from 1980 through 2023. It's quite certain that Mr. Murphy inspired me to become a Teacher after age 30, returning to college at the University of New Mexico to get my Degree in Education.

I recall with great clarity Mr.Murphy's stentorian delivery, interspersed with drool remarks, various puns, and outright joking! He was quite entertaining, interesting, and just plain Fun!

Yeah, he was a great man and wonderful teacher... I was able to encounter him and chat a bit on a couple of WHS '65 reunions years later. He still had the same magnificent voice and delivery, that of the great orator he was.

The best of these encounters was my own chance to thank him for inspiring me to take up Education as a new profession during a time of some confusion in my own life!

Yes, he was one for the ages in my view, as I know others feel the same to this day. Rip Gerald Murphy...

I am all at once so sad to hear of Gerry's passing and so so very grateful to have had the gift of knowing and learning from Gerry. So many of us were inspired by our time with Gerry to be the kind of thinkers and human beings who see the world as it is and yet to know our time here is meant to make this world a better one. What a treasure he was and his legacy will always be. Thoughts and prayers to his family and dear friends (dear Goddards atop that list).

Gerry Murphy was so much to so many kids who had the "luck" to have him as a teacher going through WHS. A solid, genuine man who was truly gifted in connecting with his students. My prayers go out to his family and friends and I speak for the class of '67 in saying "God's peace" to a guy who really made a difference in our lives.

Jerry Murphy was inspirational! I had him as a teacher in Wellesley Junior High. The class room became alive with his engagement with his students. Most of all, he was a true original and kind human being.

Gerry, "Mr Murphy", was an indelible influence on my life. I met him through the "Humanities class" he co-taught with Jeanie Goddard, and they both opened doors to learning for me. During that senior year and all through subsequent life, Gerry's friendship and humanity were by my side. We would get together periodically, and I always looked forward to seeing him at our reunions, or a football game. I was shocked and dismayed to learn of his passing. I have lost a friend.

I last saw Gerry at my 45th high school reunion about a year ago! He seemed to be in great health and in fact, joined the class on both nights of celebration. We talked a lot. He recalled a presentation I did in fairly great detail - a memory which I had all but forgotten.

A tireless supporter and loving mentor, my condolences to his children and their families, as I am sure he provided much love to them.

Gerry was my Drivers Ed instructor and there was never a dull moment debating my Yankees vs his Sox. I know he was beloved by many. My sincere condolences to his family.

Mr. Murphy (Murph) was my American History teacher at WHS in grade 11, as I recall. He was such a fun guy and great, inspiring teacher of History, I went on to love and teach the topic myself in Secondary Schools both in California and NM.

Finally got a chance to thank him personally for this 'inspiration' in my own life at our WHS65 Fiftieth Reunion. He was there (!) and gave a greatly humorous presentation in the 'new auditorium' regarding the current status of various Faculty members along with a few brief, impromptu obituaries. Same stentorian delivery as he had always possessed, a true Orator!

Rip Gerald Murphy.

Celebrating the memory of an extraordinary person who touched and inspired the lives of everyone he met, especially the thousands of students he taught and mentored. Gerry's life was dedicated to planting trees to bear fruit for future generations. He embodied the Jewish concept of tikkun plum, repairing the world in his humble way

I was one of the 'new kids' in school when I moved from Illinois to Wellesley in 8th grade and Mr. Murphy was my homeroom teacher. In 10th grade when we moved up to the high school, there was Mr. Murphy. When I first saw him I candidly blurted out , "You got promoted to High School!" and we both had a big laugh. For so many years he has remained part of our lives; staying in touch with us, attending reunions. We are fortunate to have had such a gifted, committed teacher and friend.

Charming, funny, opinionated, passionate about teaching, passionate about the Red Sox, able to weave together literature and history, a masterful storyteller in the Irish tradition, and a true gentleman. Thanks for teaching me so much, and for letting me bring my 135 pound malamute dog to class during senior year. I guess I should break out that old copy of "The Glory and the Dream" by Manchester, and read it again in your honor. Rest in peace, you lovely man.

I graduated from WHS in 1988. Mr. Murphy was my favorite teacher. His passion for teaching could be felt by all his students. He cared for us and challenged us. All students should be so lucky to have a teacher like Mr. Murphy!

Gerry and Joel Kabatznick put together the groundbreaking Humanities course at WHS and their inspired teaching has helped all of us for our lifetimes. The world is a better place because of Gerry's long contributions and we are so thankful for his presence among us.

Gerry was my favorite teacher at Wellesley High and he became a lifelong friend. His life was such a gift to us all. I know my sadness at not being able to share more in his humor and joy of living, most recently with a regular group of my 'Class of 1969' friends and another great teacher, Don Kaplan, means there's going to be a substantial missing bunch of smiles and jokes. We'll have to toast heartily to this great educator and dear friend. It's a great loss to me but my heart goes out to his closest family and friends for their love and support of Gerry here during his latest battle to stay with us. Thank you for all your love and tender care of this wonderful being - a Mensch in the largest sense of that word's usage. Weren't we all extraordinarily blessed to have known and loved Gerry?
