Dan Cuddy Obituary

Alaska pioneer, Daniel Hon Cuddy, passed away in Anchorage, Alaska, on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at the age of 94. His was a life well lived. Dan was born in Valdez, Alaska, on Feb. 8, 1921; the second son to Warren and Lucy Cuddy. The young Cuddy family moved from Valdez to Anchorage in 1933, where they quickly set down deep roots. Warren opened a law practice and eventually purchased controlling interest in the First National Bank of Anchorage. Dan attended Anchorage High School. He continued his wildlife adventures, running trap lines along Ship Creek, duck hunting on the Cook Inlet mud flats and sheep and moose hunting in the Chugach Mountains. As a young boy, Dan served as grounds keeper of the golf course that is now the Park Strip and later as an employee of the Emard Packing Company, rising quickly from the "slime line" to supervisor in 1938. Dan attended Stanford University, but World War II interrupted his education. He was assigned to the 1255th Engineer Combat Battalion, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and assisting in the closing of the concentration camp at Buchenwald, Germany. During the war, Dan earned three Bronze Stars and a World War II Victory Medal for his heroic and meritorious services in a combat zone. He had tremendous respect for his fellow soldiers, and always referred to them as "The Heroes." After the War, Dan returned to Stanford to finish his economics degree, and later attended University of Washington Law School. While in law school, Dan agreed to a blind date with Betti Puckett and they were married the following year. The young couple settled in Anchorage, driving their roots deeper. Dan began his professional career in his father's law firm in 1947. He assumed the role as president of the First National Bank of Anchorage upon his father's death in 1951. Dan was only 30 years old. It is believed Dan was the youngest bank president in the nation at the time. He enjoyed banking because he said, "he liked helping people, serving the community and helping it grow." He continued working at the Bank until the last days of his life. In all of that time, Dan often commented, "I never received a promotion!" Dan loved Alaska and respected those who chose to live and thrive in this state. He loved his family, he loved his Bank, he loved to fish and hunt and he taught his family to share his loves. Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Lucy; his brother, David; his wife, Betti; and his granddaughter, Nikki. He is survived by his six children, Betsy (David) Lawer, David (Kathy) Cuddy, Gretchen Cuddy, Jane (Gary) Klopfer, Lucy (Mark) Mahan and Laurel (Fred) Stutzer; 14 grandchildren and their spouses; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Wendy Williamson Theater on May 26, 2015, at 6 p.m., with a reception at the Lucy Cuddy Center immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Betti Cuddy Foundation by making checks payable to Betti Cuddy Foundation and mailed to the Foundation c/o Raymond James, 3401 Denali Street, Ste 103, Anchorage, AK 99503. My condolences to the entire Cuddy family. I had the pleasure of working for FNBA from 2009-2012. I worked at the south branch. I was very fortunate to be able to meet and speak with him from time to time when he would come into the bank from across the street. He always had a sincere smile. He was good to his employees! He will be missed. God has gained a true hero!

Dear Cuddy Family - we were all very lucky to have the parents we did. Although there is sadness in your Dad passing, there is solace in knowing he is once again reunited with your beautiful Mom. They both left a lasting legacy, and for me personally fond memories. Thank you for sharing your Dad with all of us! love & hugs

Mr. Cuddy was a great Alaskan. I first met him in the 60s when working for lawyer Ted Stevens, we handled the closing of the purchase of the Anchorage Daily News by the Fannings from the Brown's in Cuddy's board room. Much impressed this young legal secretary. Later on I served on Alcom's Civilian Advisory Board with Mr. Cuddy. I was also a representative on the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Service (DACOWITS). Dan would look me right in the eye and say "Barb, we cannot let those young ladies go to war!" Always the gentleman. My favorite story is when we were all at a dinner put on by Augie Hiebert for Walter Cronkite. The guys at our table were asked the proverbial question "if your house was on fire, what would you try to save". Guys answered 'money, photos, art, etc". Without blinking an eye, Dan said "why Bette, of course, She's the most important thing in our house." Well said Mr. C.You won all the wives' hearts with that answer. You will be missed, my friend, but you have a lot of friends where you're going. See you at the Big Board Room in the Sky.

The death of Dan Cuddy is one of those memorable times in your life when you know a man of giant influence and personality has left us, and an era has closed. Our lives were changed and made better because of him, his family and the bank. It comes at a time when you wish Jack London or Robert Service were with us and they could truly convey our grief in the simple words of the great State of Alaska Mr. Cuddy loved and served.

When I started at the bank as a young kid in '93, I was so intimidated by him. Then I started talking with him at the bank and at bank functions and realized he was a very nice man who was never pretentious in any way even though he was the President of the bank. He treated all people with respect regardless of your position. Mr. Cuddy you will be missed.

It was an honor to know and serve Mr. Cuddy and his family in his lifetime. He encouraged a young, green Osteopathic Family Physician to aspire to great things, and demonstrated by living out the example in a meaningful and impactful way. I have deep respect for Mr. Cuddy the Alaskan, and the Person, and will always be indebted to his kindness, inspiration, and the impact he had on my life. Prayers for the family as you celebrate his life and legacy. I will be out of town and unable to attend in person, but my heart is with you. Blessings, Dr. Perkins

My father, Joe Sallison, was a long time friend of Dan Cuddy and he spoke fondly of him many times as I was growing up in the 60's. He too was a WWII. veteran. We would go to the bank where Dad and Dan would visit before and after doing their business transactions. My condolences to the Cuddy family. Minnie Sallison Fritts

This state has suffered another big loss with the passing of Dan Cuddy, a steadying influence of the financial structure of Alaska. Just as his parents, Warren and Lucy Cuddy did before him, Dan and Betti Cuddy have left their children to carry on the Alaskan traditions for which they firmly stood. The community grieves the loss with them. We are very sorry for your loss, we will miss him also. He was a great man. Our family appreciated Dan, my father sure enjoyed many visits with him. As a child my visits to the bank to see him and receiving those coins where pretty special moments in my life and you know he was happy to give them to me as a child!
