Robert Mattone Obituary

Robert G. Mattone

Little Silver - Robert G. Mattone, 54, of Little Silver passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday, July 13, 2018 at Riverview Medical Center. He was the adored son of the late John and Muriel Mattone, of Commack, NY. Born in Smithtown, NY, he relocated to Little Silver with his wife and daughter in 2000.

He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara (nee: Morris) and his loving daughter Erin Marie.

A graduate of St. Anthony's High School in Huntington, N.Y. and the University of Delaware, Bob was an accomplished golfer, winning tournaments throughout his life and was a key member of the golf teams at both schools. Bob was also a former member of the Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, N.Y. and current member of the Monmouth Beach Bath and Tennis Club and an avid New York Rangers hockey fan.

Bob was a career-long advertising sales executive in New York City. His tenure included positions at Sports Illustrated Kids, ESPN Magazine, and TV Guide Magazine. He recently concluded his career at GSTV.

His passion was coaching youth sports, including soccer and lacrosse. For eleven years, he coached boys and girls basketball at Holy Cross School where he inspired many youth athletes to continue their sports careers in high school and college. He loved attending local sports games, especially Red Bank Catholic girls tennis and lacrosse, and was a dedicated fan of his daughter, Erin's Randolph-Macon Women's collegiate lacrosse team.

Also surviving are Bob's Aunts, Marie and Madeline Mattone and their children; cousins, Robert and Charlotte Van derWaag, Irene and Joseph Drago, Michael and Mykee Murtagh, Cathy VanderWaag and Maureen Van derWaag. Additionally, Bob is survived by members of the Morris family: Father-in-law, John C. Morris (Little Silver); brothers-in-law and sisters- in-law, Chris and Pam (Richdale) Morris, David and Peggy (Morris) McGill, Andy and Maribeth (Hackett) Morris, Henry and Liz (Morris) O'Hern, Robert and Kate Sharkey, John and Jeanne (Morris) Fried, Paul and Sally (Nidds) Morris, Michael and Sarah (Morris) Schutsky, and Christopher and Clare (Morris) Broderick, Richard and Jenna (Holthusen) Morris. He is also survived by 24 nieces and nephews and their families.

A Celebration of his life will be Monday, July 16th from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave, Red Bank, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am Tuesday, July 17th at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, 30 Ward Avenue Rumson, NJ with entombment to follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Sea Girt, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob Mattone's name to Team Impact: "A national nonprofit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with local college athletic teams, forming life-long bonds and life-changing outcomes."

I just learned of Bob's passing and am so saddened by this news. I knew Bob from "the industry" and we first met in 1990 I believe -- we were also both U of D graduates so we shared that in common as well -- I just saw Bob last year in a lobby of an ad agency of course and he was all smiles -- I told him I "finally" had a child and he was all smiles as if he knew how much that means because his family meant everything to him and yes he of course bragged about his daughter.

What a GENUINE person and I just want his family to know that others are feeling your pain -- he will be for sure missed and for sure remembered. God Bless.

It was such an honor to have Bob as a close friend for 25 years, The most generous, thoughtful friend anyone could ever have. Always positive with a smile on his face. Had the gift of making everyone feel better about themselves.

You'll be dearly missed by everyone. I'm a better person for having you as a friend.

God bless.

What a great guy Bob was! I had to like him whether out was at the beach club, or a quick chat after mass at Holy Cross, or longer ones waiting for the ferry. One thing was alway clear was how much Barb and Erin meant to him. May the angels lead him to paradise, may the martyrs greet him and the saints welcome him.

Barbara, Erin and all Bob's friends and family,
I wanted to send my deepest condolences on the passing of Bob. I had the absolute pleasure of working with him at TV Guide in the early 2000's and we luckily crossed paths again at Verifone in 2016-2017. Bob was one of the most straightforward and genuine people you could meet..especially in this crazy business. Words can not express how sorry I am to hear this news. He always spoke so lovingly of his family and his life. I'm grateful I was able to know him.... God Bless all of you. Amen. Cindy Thieme/Detroit
