Dr. Merrill Lewis was a well-known and well-respected Professor of English at Western Washington University: so intelligent, patient, and devoted to his students and his work. His pioneering scholarship on women writers of the American West has remained foundational to the academic field into the twenty-first century. May he rest in peace.

We will all miss the "Father of Edison Wheat". Merrill was such a humble and kind person and we felt privileged to take his beloved Edison wheat and expand its growing and use through out schools and bakeries in the PNW and California. Sue and I will always value our time spent with Merrill. Very few people knew what an accomplished cereal grain breeder this quiet, retired professor really was...
Rest in peace Merrill.

At age 13, my family moved from New Jersey to New Mexico. I have lived the balance of my life in the West. Merrill Lewis's excellent classes at Western guided me in thinking and reading about the West. He was a master teacher. His work stays with me. I miss him.
