David Gregory Obituary

GLASGOW - David Gregory died the evening of Jan. 15, 2005, of pancreatic cancer, surrounded by his family, at home in Glasgow.
He was born in Macon, Ga., May 31, 1920, to David A. Gregory, MD, and Mary Williams Gregory. He was raised in northeastern South Dakota, graduating from Milbank High School in 1937, and the University of South Dakota in 1941. He then graduated from Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago, interned at Wesley Memorial Hospital, and married Patricia Elizabeth Tisdale of Grand Forks, North Dakota, in Evanston, Ill., on Sept. 18, 1942. Service in the Philippines (1945-1946) as an orthopedic surgeon in the U.S. Army Medical Corps was followed by obstetrical training at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, then further study in physiology at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Gregory stepped off the train in Glasgow in the spring of 1948 and lived there the rest of his life, raising his family and caring for his community.
He was of a vanished breed of family doctor, performing surgery, delivering babies, fixing broken bones and counseling generations of northeastern Montanans. Caring for the children of babies he had delivered was among his greatest joys.
He served his profession well as president of the Montana Medical Association, president of the Western Conference of Pre-Paid Medical Plans and member of the board of national Blue Cross/Blue Shield. He also gave his energies to the Boy Scouts, Kiwanis Club, Masonic Lodge, Elk's Lodge and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. Until he retired in 1988, Dr. Gregory traveled to rural Honduras with Christian medical missions regularly.
After he decided to give up his beloved Cessna Skymaster, his abiding fascination with creatures larger than himself led him off chasing blue and grey whales through southern seas. When fossil remains of fantastic creatures were found close to home, he channeled his still abundant energies into the creation of the Ft. Peck Dam Museum and Interpretive center, especially the paleontology field station. Still an adventurer at age 80, he helped dig fossils in southern China. Dr. Gregory was always an ardent supporter of Valley County, savoring news of economic development plans until just days before his death.
David Gregory is survived by his wife, Patricia of Glasgow; his sons, David (Marge) of Green River, Wyo., John (Mary Beth) of Billings and James (Nancy) of Greensboro, N.C.; and his daughter Patty of Portland, Ore., his devoted caregiver in the final weeks of his life. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his youngest children, Mary Margaret, in 1972 and Thomas George in 2000.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Montana Community Foundation, c/o Ft. Peck Dam Interpretive Center Account, 101 N. Last Chance Gulch, Helena MT, 59601, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 315 Sixth St. S., Glasgow, MT, 59230, or a memorial of one's choice.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Glasgow.

My condolences to the Gregory family. Doc was a good one for sure! He will be missed as he was a fixture in the Glasgow Community. He truly was interested in the people of Glasgow and actually all people that needed a healing hand.

Dr B.P. Little was my original family doctor, but I used ole Doc Gregory a few times for a couple of Boy Scout & pre-school physicals. I remember most, that noisy Skymaster as it passed over our house on base leg for runway 12 or on departure for runway 30. It made me look up and dream every time I saw it. Doc and I would 'talk airplanes' on occation at our family Exxon station. As a kid on my first flying job at Wokal Flying Service in Glasgow, I got to fly that Skymaster of Doc's and I thought I was in heaven. I'm a Captain at America West Airlines now but still only think of one person when a Skymaster wanders by...Doc Gregory. To John and the rest of the Gregory family, my condolences. I could only wish to live a life as fulfilled as ole Doc's.

With the Glasgow Clinic next door to our Exxon station, we felt safer knowing we could run next door to Doc Gregory should an accident happen. Fortunately we only had to use his talents for minor injuries. To Pat and the rest of the family, we extend our condolences for a man that deserves to be well remembered.

Memories of growing up in Glasgow always include Doc Gregory. Between Boy Scout canoe trips, visiting him to get stitched up after another mishap, or just sharing a story or two with him, he was in retrospect a larger-than-life figure in my life. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the family and with the multitudes who have felt his influence in their lives through the years.

Boone had mentioned that Doc was ailing at Christmas time. I met Doc through my involvement with the Interp center. He was focused, involved, understanding and committed to this endeavor. I had previously been a classmate to his son David at the University of Montana, Missoula, where we had partnered for a geology project on the Poplar Dome. Doc, we are gonna miss you. I send my sincere condolences to the family.

Dear Gregory family,

I was saddened to hear about Dr Gregory's passing. No words can express the loss you are feeling at this time, but know so many of us that Dr. "raised" by making sure we and our families stayed healthy are praying for you. My prayer is that you will feel the arms of our Loving Father in Heaven around you as your hearts are healing.

Dr. Gregory will be fondly remembered as one of the great Family Practice Drs (before that became a specialty), and a very caring humanitarian of the Glasgow area. His caring, intelligence, sense of humor, and joy of living will be missed.

Your father delivered me into the world. When I was a child, he would come to the house to care for me when I had tonsilitis as my mother couldn't drive. He was truly a great humanitarian.

Mrs. Gregory, David, Patty, John, & James:

I was saddened, when hearing of the passing of your Husband and Father. My condolences go out to you all.

He was my Doctor, my Friend, my Brother, and a very special man.

My contact with him was on a professional level, and a personal level while growing up.

He put me back together on more than one occasion, usually after doing somethng stupid on my Honda. I remember him telling me that the ankle that I had broken would be fine, but when I hit 40 it would start probably start to bother me. He was only off by 2 years.

Our Scout troop was planning a trip down the Missouri River in the early 60s. I was behind getting my kayak built and was not going to be able to go. While on a "shake down cruise" at the lake, I noticed that the bow of the canoe Dr. Gregory was going to take on the trip, rode pretty high out of the water, with him in the back. I suggested that, I go along as ballast in the front and he agreed. I have been ever thankful to him, for that gesture. That trip is one of my fondest memories of growing up.

Thank you for sharing him.
