Hushie Silverstein Obituary

Hushie Silverstein
Mrs. Silverstein, 93, of the Carriage Club of Charlotte died Friday, April 8, 2005. Hushie was born on March 8, 1912, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Morris and Ethel Cohen and the youngest of seven children. At an early age Hushie moved with her family to Los Angeles, where she was raised and later attended the University of Southern California. Although she didn't move to Charlotte until her late 20's when she married Isadore Silverstein, Hushie seemed like a lifelong Charlottean and embraced the city's social causes as well as its arts community. Hushie was a vibrant presence at National Hat Shop, a fixture of downtown Charlotte that she owned with her husband, Isadore, for 51 years.
Hushie will be remembered for her feisty spirit and her desire to always help those in need. Throughout her life, she was dedicated to numerous charitable organizations. Hushie served on the board of the Community Concert Association as well as the March of Dimes, and was a past president of both Temple Israel Sisterhood and the Charlotte chapter of Hadassah. In addition, she volunteered her services to many organizations including the Girl Scouts of America, the Performing Arts Center, Temple Israel and the Levine Jewish Community Center.
Hushie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Isadore. She is survived by her children Gary and Maxine Silverstein of Charlotte and Bill and Robyn VanDresser of Huntersville; grandchildren Scott and Tamara Silverstein of Charlotte, Kara Silverstein of Chicago, Illinois, and Will VanDresser of Lincolnton; and sister Roslyn Gillman of Jacksonville, Florida. Hushie will also be dearly missed by her close friend Thelma Wertzberger of Charlotte.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30p.m. Monday, April 11 at Temple Israel, with Rabbi's Murray Ezring and Ari Sunshine and Cantor Elias Roochvarg officiating. Internment will follow at Hebrew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Israel, 4901 Providence Road, Charlotte, North Carolina, 28226.
