James Alfred Webb

James Webb Obituary

James Alfred Webb
Mr. Webb, of Charlotte, died at home surrounded by family and friends on September 6, 2008 after a three-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). He was born December 17, 1940 in Norwood, NC, son of the late Alfred Branson Webb and Florence Alexander Webb. He graduated from Norwood High School in 1959 then served four years in the United States Navy. A 'fix-it' man for all his life, Alfred retired from Carolina Tractor and Equipment Company after 35 years as a heavy equipment mechanic. He was a faithful member of Independence Hill Baptist Church, devoting countless hours of service to his Lord through the Hearts and Hammers Mission Project. This endeavor began with its first project in 1989 and still continues today. He also served as a deacon and was a member of various other committees. Alfred was a member of Statesville Road Volunteer Fire Department and served as Chief for several years. No one was ever a stranger to Alfred. He was blessed with the gift of conversation and enjoyed meeting and talking with new people everywhere he went. Everyone who met him loved him. He truly was a man with a servant's heart. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother who kept a positive attitude right to the very end and was an inspiration to us all. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Alfred is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Jean Edwards Webb; son, Jimmy Webb and friend, Rhyta Lancaster of Kannapolis, NC; daughter Deanna Prevette and husband Sean of Statesville, NC; grandson, D.J. Webb; granddaughter, Dylan Prevette; sister, Virginia Serina and husband David of Lillington, NC; and brother Riley Webb and wife Frances of Norwood, NC.
Other surviving family members include sisters-in-law, Vivian Talbert of Albemarle, NC and Miriam Evans and husband Dave of Winter Haven, FL; brother-in-law, Ben Edwards and friend Teresa Pardue of Statesville, NC; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends at Raymer Funeral Home at 16901 Old Statesville Road in Huntersville from 7 to 9pm Monday, September 8, 2008. A service to celebrate Alfred's life will be held at Independence Hill Baptist Church at 10220 Eastfield Road in Huntersville, 11 am Tuesday, September 9, 2008. Interment will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Independence Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 10220 Eastfield Road, Huntersville, NC 28078; or Muscular Dystrophy Association for ALS Research, 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 320, Charlotte, NC 28210; or Hospice and Palliative Care of Lake Norman, 705 Griffith Street, Suite 203, Davidson, NC 28036.

I loved Alfred as much as any one. He was a wonderful person and brother in law. I hate to hear that he has left us all. He will truely be missed. He was a great example to others for his leadership and service to his Lord and community. He was always there if he could be when you needed him. My heart goes out to you during this time. There is one thing we can believe and that he is not suffering or struggling.
He is at rest!! Love to all.

We have a lot of great memories with Alfred and all of the family. He has definitely set a Christian example for all. We are so sorry that Alfred had to leave, but he is in the greatest place and we look forward to seeing him there. We are praying for peace in your lives, that God will carry you through this, just as the Footprint poem says, and I know that he is.

Love,
Walter and Cindy

Dear Jean and family,

I know you will miss dear sweet Alfred as we all will. Alfred was an incredible and wonderful man. An awesome Christian example. I feel truly blessed to have known him. I will miss his smile!

It was my honor to know Alfred. As a kid running around his home, and as a fellow IHBC member, to be in his presence was to understand what a true Christian is. Willing to do whatever had to be done in the service of others, that was Alfred. A tireless worker during Hearts & Hammers projects, as well as lesser known events, he brought an understanding of how to serve our Lord with joy and love. That quick smile and hearty laugh will always be remembered. What a blessing he was, and is, to all who knew him.

He is now with our Lord, and I'm sure he is looking down on us with a smile on his face.
