I first encountered John Mocker back in the 80's when we were both pretty new at the insurance game at the Malloy Agency in Stamford, CT. I am pleased to tell you that his quiet, soft spoken demeanor was no different back then than the last time I saw him some years back at the Norwalk office. Here are my thoughts on John.
He was a quiet man. Although quiet and of gentle nature, not a man of few words. My favorite joke for him when asking him a question was..." I'm not planning on building the clock, just need to know what time it is"....I thoroughly enjoyed our very frequent Monday morning critiques of how badly the Giants played on Sunday when he would pop his head in my office asking if I saw the game. And on that note, John is the primary reason my son Jeff when he was very little had the privilege of attending many of those games, John always made sure tickets were available to me. His grandfather had season tickets that he was fortunate enough to wind up with. He was amazing about sharing access to those and my son benefited greatly from those game memories. He was also for those who knew him a devout UCONN fan. I was honored to attend the wedding for he and Maureen along with a very small contingent from a very small Glover Agency way back then. It was special for all of us.
I can't even imagine John raising his voice, much less being aggressive or unkind to anyone. That just wasn't in his DNA. He wasn't a man of grand gestures in either his actions or speech. He wasn't the quiet man who carries the big stick.....he didn't feel the need for that .He was the first to offer help...the last to seek recognition for his deeds. I believe that his quiet dignity was heavily rooted in his family ties, his friends and the way he completely embraced and celebrated his Irish heritage. I will try myself, the next time I feel like venting or letting off steam,to remember his soft spoken gentle way. True greatness lies not in just power and wealth exclusively but more so in the way in which we treat others, with kindness, decency and respect. He will surely be remembered and greatly missed by his family and friends for just those qualities.

John Mocker was an important part of our Wednesday morning business networking group for many years. He was always helpful and encouraging to all, especially those new to the business world. He will be sorely missed by our group, by his business office and all those he sought to help in the business realm, not just missed by his friends and family. His memory shall always serve as a blessing to all he touched. May God hold John´s soul in the palm of His hand forever.
