Dear Jack & Cheryl,
Just want you to know that you are in our thots & prayers as you move thru the first year remembrance of Dan's death. Paula & I continue to pray for you & your family.
You are so precious to us & we ache & hurt with you. There is no way that I can even remotely understand what you have & continue to experience each moment of each day, but hope that you know how much I hurt alongside you. Dan is such a fine young man & Heaven has gained a terrific soul & spirit.
Know that Paula & I love you & wish you the comfort that not only your family & friends can give, but the comfort from the Lord Jesus & the Holy Spirit.
God bless you & may you sense His loving care & peace today & in the days to come.

Cheryl..you are almost through your first year of Firsts....I have seen your struggles...tears...and some smiles. Spring is in the year with new air, smells, baby animals, flowers..everything that Dan would have been happy about as he was such an outdoor kinda guy.....Hope you find some peace in the days ahead...I Love You.

We've heard of this most tragic accident by our son Dennis van de Laar, friend of the brother of Daniel, Matthew. We deeply condole his parents and family by this great lost. In times like these, our broken hearts and fervent prayers go out to your dear family. We were so saddened to hear of the loss of Dan. Having had so few visits with you because of distance we have few memories of Dan. But the ones we do are all special ones like quiet, kind and, interested listener of everyone . Truly we wish we could have known him better. A verse that is so true for you to claim is Psalm 62:8 "Trust in Him at all times,you people. Pour out your heart before Him. God is a refuge for us."
Thank you Cheryl and Jack for being the great parents you are. We are so glad and proud to be related to you and we enjoy the rich memories of our times together. Be assured of our continued prayers for you.

I met Dan my first semester at WIU when I transfered there. We just happened to live on the same floor. Dan was one of my first few friends at Western. Dan was a great person and will be missed by all. My prayers go out to his family.

I only knew Dan since 2006 but he became as good a friend as my lifelong friends. Such a nice guy and a good listener. We had some deep conversations. I'm so sorry to everyone for their loss.

There is one word that characterizes Dan - that being the word "Love". Dan's "love" was expressed to everyone he met. We have a step Grandson who was the recipient of Dan's love who struggled to win friends. When told of Dan's "homegoing", he went to his room and cried for an hour. When he came out with tears in his eyes, he said to our son, "Dan was my friend". What better legacy could be left to the world?
Dan always made time for our family get-togethers. Many memories flood our minds and will never be forgotten.

When God gave Dan to Cheryl and Jack he was a loan. He can give us joy and he can give us sadness. God gives and takes. He had plans for Dan in his short time on earth. He knew he would bring much joy to all those he touched. He knew that Dan was special. God doesn't just take the old. He takes those who have done his work on this earth. No matter what the age of the person. If Dan touched you during his life, you have been blessed to have known him.His eyes have seen the Glory. He now waits for us to join him so we too can see the Glory.

We were so blessed to have known Dan and spent as much time with him as we did. He was always happy and so sweet with our boys, Tom and Zach, at all our family functions. Even when he was younger, he and his siblings would entertain our boys. He made a connection to our family that we will never forget. He will not be forgotten and our memories are sweet.
