Charles Whitten Obituary

YORKTOWN - Charles "Chuck" Whitten, passed away on October 26, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Ethel Whitten; brother, Bobby Ray; and son, David Whitten. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn, the love of his life and soul mate for 59 years; brother, Ron (Nancy) Whitten; daughters, Suzanne Hayes (Shanon) and Leah Norris (Trey); five grandsons, Taylor and Brayden Hayes, CJ Whitten, Christian and Brady Norris; several nieces and nephews and other close family members. Chuck was a native of Alabama and moved to Virginia in 1985. His career was in the research, development, and marketing of coal. He retired as President of the Pier IX Coal Terminal in 2009. Chuck was a man of deep faith, integrity and unrelenting dedication and love for his family. He was a longtime member and elder of Northside Christian Church. In his retirement, he dedicated his time, efforts and talents to rebuilding Northside Christian Church, which was destroyed by fire in 1999. He loved his five grandsons and enjoyed being their cheerleader at all sporting and academic events. He and "his" boys shared their love of Alabama football. A memorial service to celebrate Chuck's life will be held 4:00 pm Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Northside Christian Church with Senior Minister Larry Jones officiating. The family will receive friends one-hour prior to service in the church. A reception will be held following the service at the church Student Center. A private burial will be held later in Williamsburg Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Northside Christian Church Student Center, 1300 George Washington Memorial Highway, Yorktown, VA 23693. Charles was such a godly man. It showed in every endeavor, conversation, project, the way he treated all family, and in everything he did. I will never forget how kindly he always spoke to me and how he encouraged me to write a book about my life. I regret I never attempted that. Even though we lived so far in distance, we did communicate via e-mail and Facebook. I will never forget what a sweet, wonderful man he was. My heart goes out to Charles' entire family, Carolyn, children, grandchildren, and Ron. This world has suffered a tremendous loss.

Our Prayers are with you. We'll remember Chuck as an enthusiastic fan watching all of his grandkid's activities. He was a loving person who looked out for my Mom and Dad as they went through their struggles. Please let us know of anything we may possible do for you. Heartfelt condolences Steve and Joann Shuder.

I cannot tell you how much I will miss him. My prayers are with the family as the go through this sadness. We were first cousins and had a special bond. We went to school and college together and kept in touch. My heart is broken and I can only imagine how the family feels.

My deepest sympathy to Carolyn and the children and Ronnie and Nancy and their family on the passing of Charles. I didn't get to see Charles and Carolyn often, but when I did, he was just a wonderful gentleman and cousin. He and my Dad, William E (Billy Boy) Lorance were first cousins. Charles was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and brother. He will be greatly missed even if I didn't see him often. May God comfort all the family.
