Edward Ciszkowski Obituary

Edward Joseph Ciszkowski "Wally"

A lifelong resident of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully, after a lengthy illness, on March 19, 2011, with his family by his side at the age of 75.

Ed, son of the late Adam and Alexandria Ciszkowski, attended Brown Vocational School and went on to join the U.S. Navy in 1952. Ed served his country proudly for 4 years. In returning to Wilmington, Ed took on employment at the Chrysler Plant from 1956-1958. In the midst of Ed's Chrysler years, he met his loving wife of 51 years, Dorothy Basara. They married November 21, 1959. At that time, Ed began a new career with the Wilmington Police Department. He served for 20 years and retired as Sergeant in 1979. He enjoyed his lifelong memberships with the D.A.P. and the F.O.P. as well.

After Ed's retirement from the police department, he worked as the Head of Food Services at Brandywine College (Widener Law School). In 1981, Ed was employed in the Transportation Department of the DuPont Company in Wilmington. He was the Executive Driver of his department and received many awards for his excellence in "Driving Safety". Ed retired from the DuPont Company in 1994. Never one to sit idle, Ed began work for the Delaware Department of Labor in 1996. He took on the position of "Unemployment Fraud Investigator", where he enjoyed his work until the year 2000.

Ed is predeceased in life by not only his mother and father, but his sisters Mary Wyka, Helen Maykut, Lillian Kaminski, Tessie Liskiewicz and brothers Ben and Henry. He will always be loved in the hearts of those he leaves behind. Especially, his wife Dorothy and their children; son Gary and wife Karen of Wilmington; son Jeff and wife Vera of Safety Harbor, FL and daughter Dana Nitsche and husband Gary of Centreville. In having touched the lives of his 10 grandchildren and great-grandson, each one will miss their Pop Pop Wally in so many loving ways: Adam, Amanda, Zachary, Brandon, Dylan, Jena, Josh, Keeley, Rory, Kathy and Jason. His sister, Jane Klapcuniak, brother Adam and an abundant number of nieces, nephews and his long time friends also survive Ed.

The family would like to thank the many wonderful staff members at the VA Hospice. Their love, care and support for Ed and his family are a tribute to their commitment to the respect for the final days of ones life.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on the family on Friday, March 25 from 6 until 8 pm, at MCCRERY & HARRA FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike Talleyville, DE 19803. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am on Saturday, March 26, at Immaculate Heart of Mary, Roman Catholic Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. Entombment will be held at Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, immediately following services. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Delaware Veterans, c/o Serenity Hospice of Veteran Affairs, Kirkwood Highway, Elsmere, DE 19805.

Mrs. C, Jeff, Dana, and Gary,

Sorry to hear of your loss. When I saw this the first memory that popped into my head was my first time eating blue crabs at the Ciszkowski house and your dad's crab sauce. I have a recipe from Dinardo's, but it does not live up to his. My deepest sympathy.

Like Peej, many early memories of Mr. Skow. As a matter of fact, I was just talking to someone about his crab dipping sauce and how it was the best thing ever. My sincere condolences to Mrs. Skow, Cisco, Gary, and Dana.
