I heard of Mr. Wilhelm's passing just today. I'm doing arts advocacy work in the Senate, and realized how much of my confidence in approaching Senator's offices remains rooted in the deeply humanistic view of government he taught his students. I wanted to reach out with a thanks; I'll still pass them on here, to whoever may see them. Mr. Wilhelm was a a gift, and I'm deeply grateful to have known him for whatever time I did.

So sad to hear about the passing of the beloved Mr. Wilhelm. He was my 7th grade Humanities/History teacher at Hamilton. It's been 22 years since I last spoke to him, but he pops into my mind every so often and I look him up to see if he's still teaching. I thought of him a few moments ago and was so sad to find out he's passed. Though our relationship was brief, his kindness and passion left a lasting impact on me and he will be missed. I feel so blessed to have known him, if only for a short while.

Mr. Wilhelm was the best social studies teacher I had. I loved his class. He inspired me to become a middle school history teacher. When I came back from undergrad to visit him at Hamilton, he gave me great advice as I embarked on my teaching career.

I could say a million nice things about Doug, but what I will always think of is his smile and genuine friendliness. Whether it was over a good beer, a poor golf shot or solving the worlds problems it was a true pleasure to have known Doug.

How do I put into words my love and loss for Doug. Growing up together Doug always kept things fun and adventurous. He was a great role model as I was the younger of three. My memories of our fun times, our close times and sometimes just our chats on the phone are wonderful. Doug was always the trailblazer for my sister and I. He had a love for life and lived life to his fullest when we were younger. He had great friends and friendships. Doug was always there for Debbie and I no matter what! I’m so thrilled that Doug found Rita and they had such a happy family with Tommy. They were the loves of his life. I know Doug wanted Tommy to be the best that he could be. So with fond farewell Doug, I love you so much I think of you every day and my tears are of happiness for you.

Dear Rita, Thomas and the Wilhelm family- I am writing to express my deepest condolences upon hearing of the passing of Doug. I was on the 8th grade team when Doug was at Hamilton. He was an anchor to us all, an excellent leader, so kind and caring, always positive and a treasure to have in one’s life. I recall his classroom was a wonderful environment in terms of peace and challenge. His Evening of Eminence was one of the highlights of the academic year and I continue to use the idea of writing a letter to one’s self for reflection, understanding and wisdom. When Doug was ‘in the house’, we knew everything would be all right. When I think of Doug’s gift to the world, I continue to be inspired. Please know, I share your grief.
Most sincerely,
Emily Pringle

Mr. Wilhelm was one of the best teachers I ever had. He was incredibly kind, enthusiastic, and patient. In the gentlest and most compassionate way, Mr. Wilhelm helped teach me that sometimes relationships are more important than perfectionism. I am so grateful to have had Mr. Wilhelm as a teacher— he will be missed.

I'm so sorry, Rita and Tommy, about the loss of Doug. My heart goes out to you both. He was beloved by so many students, co-workers, friends, and family. I met Doug in 2007 when I was his student teacher. I remember my little brother, who had Doug as a teacher at Hamiton, sharing so many stories about what a fantastic teacher and person he was. I was so happy and honestly a little intimidated when Doug agreed to be my mentor teacher. That semester, I learned a lot about teaching, life, and myself. Doug had and continues to have such a profound impact on my life and career. He both pushed me out of my confront zone and encouraged me. A year later, when I was offered a teaching position at Hamilton, I called Doug right away and left a message thanking him and sharing how excited I was to be teaching at Hamilton. Doug kept that message. Sometimes, especially after a challenging day at work, Doug reminded me of that message and the excitement and joy I felt. He also knew, institutively, what people needed at any given moment to feel valued, motivated, and heard. I'm saddened that Doug is gone, but I'm grateful, like so many, to have known him.

I was a student in Mr. Wilhelm's class at Hamilton and I credit him for spurring my love of history! He was so smart, earnest and caring. I still remember a debate he set up in class which caused me to join speech and debate in high school! I will always remember his kind smile, it made middle school (a rough time for many) much more bearable! I am saddened to hear of his passing and he will be missed!

I was Mr. Wilhelm’s student at Hamilton in 2005-2006. He has always been one of my favorite teachers. I vividly remember learning to tie a tie (which I still know how to do today and have helped others do!), memorizing the Gettysburg Address, and receiving the letter from my 8th grade self in high school. Mr. Wilhelm was a phenomenal teacher who deeply cared about his students and inspired a passion for learning in everyone he met. I am almost 30 years old and still remember his lessons and classroom from when I was 13. I’m deeply saddened he is no longer with us, and keeping his family in my prayers.

I am so sorry to hear of Doug's passing. He was a very nice and gentle soul. I worked with Doug in the 1990's at Smiley Middle School for a few years. He was new to teaching, and we talked about how 6th graders are cute kids, but they can develop a wild side as they enter middle school. He was confident that he could handle the new adventure, and I know the kids grew to love and respect him because he was a very good teacher who cared about them and taught them well. Much later, I met him again when he was at Hamilton Middle School. I was happy to hear that he was still going strong. A true teacher! I just loved reading about his yearly History Project with kids taking on historical roles and role-playing with guests and parents at Hamilton. There's no better way to teach than to create a lesson for kids to learn to experience another's life with knowledge, compassion, and empathy. That's a mark of a great history teacher!!!....... My heartfelt condolences and prayers to Doug's family, friends, and former students.

Doug Wilhelm was an exceptional teacher and positive role model for our son, Joe. In 1991 our son entered 6th grade at Smiley Middle School and we had concerns the educational demands on him were insufficient. After a meeting with Doug he suggested our son prepare and give his class. We believe Doug's support and encouragement was instrumental in our son's success.

I had this wonderful man as a teacher when I was in 8th. At such a young age you often look towards people as mentors, he was one of them for me. He had such a great attitude towards life and treated everyone one of his students with love. I strictly remember him getting mad at me for not memorizing a speech on the Declaration of Independence. When I asked what I could have done better, he said I not only needed to prepare more but also have more confidence in myself. I am a sophomore in college now and he truly changed my life for the better.

Mr Wilhelm left a lasting impression on our twin teenagers in his history class. He had each of his students take on a role of a significant individual in history and then present themselves in character at a special evening event at school, compete with props and wardrobe. He had each of his students write letters to themselves, which he would then mail to them 3 years later. Without a doubt he was/is one of Denver's most celebrated teachers. Thank you for the gifts you gave our children Doug. You live on in the meaningful lessons and memories each of your students now carry forward.

Mr. Wilhelm is one of those teachers you always remembered. He ignited a spark of curiosity and learning in so many of those students that he taught, myself included. I had the pleasure of being in his class at Hamilton Middle School in 2003-2004. It was during this time that I fondly remember learning to tie a neck-tie He even made all the girls in the class learn as well, stating they will have to help their husbands! An absolutely unforgettable lesson and life skill! Rest In Peace, you are missed by all!

I was his student about 10 years ago, I remember the Evening of Eminence! I was John Stuart Mill, my sister participated in it years later too. I remember Mr. Wilhelm fondly as the teacher who taught me how to tie a tie, it’s helped me in every interview since. I mourn his passing and I wish you all peace and reflection in this time.

There truly are no words to describe what a remarkable & wonderful person Doug was. He was always genuine & engaging. He loved deep and thoughtful conversations, his passion for life was inspiring. His passion for teaching, in and out of the classroom, was evident in every connection. His love for learning and listening with genuine interest was in every conversation. This was a man who thrived experiencing life through his relationships with others. Especially with my sister Rita, & their son Tommy. Love was evident every time you them together. I can almost hear his voice, assuring us he's ok, encouraging us to move forward, telling us about the richness of his life, how much he loved every moment, that he was happy. And encouraging us to be too. Seize the Day. I can see his ready smile in my mind. May it never fade. His legacy is vast and beautiful. He truly changed lives. Inspiring, beautiful, generous, loving, interested, caring, engaging. Goodbye is unbelievably difficult. He lives on in the lives of family, friends, and students who will plant those seeds, and in turn, those seeds will grow again. Thank you Doug, I'm gonna go sew some seeds. Love you Rita! Love you Tommy!

I met Doug in college when I pledged the fraternity in which Doug already was a member. When I moved into the fraternity house, Doug lived next door. I had the good fortune to spend a lot of time together and after college we even worked for the same company for a while. I’ve always known Doug to be a fun loving and intellectually curious person. I always was proud to count Doug in my group of friends. As things happen in life, we moved to different parts of the country and went a very long time without speaking but twice before Covid a group of fraternity brothers got together for a golf trip and from the moment we arrived it seemed as if no time had passed in our lives. I was looking forward to seeing Doug again for another golf trip post-Covid. As with so many others, I will miss Doug, his fun nature and his perspectives and I pray for his soul and peace in the hereafter.

Though my contact with Doug was rare, since high school he’s been one of my favorite people. Always a smile and kind word, sense of humor, and love of family. When we were both living in Denver, he brought me Sky-Way burgers after a trip back to Akron. He will be missed.

I will remember Doug as just being a really good guy.., always welcoming, genuine, curious, sometimes reflective, a quick smile and a rye sense of humor. I can’t remember a single unpleasant moment in his presence, which I think is quite remarkable. Very few people are capable of actively engaging and making others feel good, respected, capable and encourage them to see possibility. What a gift to have such a person as a teacher! I never had the opportunity to see him in the classroom, but I have tremendous admiration for him as father - so caring, so thoughtful and deliberate, encouraging and supportive. I still remember him sharing the piggy bank he made for Tommy - with compartments for savings, spending, giving and family contribution - teaching Tommy responsibility from an early age and reflective spending Taking time to look back and evaluate how well the money was spent looking back. Not judging himself, but letting Tommy decide. He was always teaching Guiding is perhaps a better word, challenging Tommy to explore and find his own voice and path. And I’ve always admired his marriage to my sister they just seemed like a perfect fit able to finish each other’s sentences, in harmony with one another, whether they were hosting an event or laboring side by side in the garden. A true collaboration It just seems incomprehensible that someone who loved life, was still so eager to experience and participate in it, is no longer with us. My heart aches for Rita and Tommy. What a treasure to have had the gift of his presence, but that much harder to absorb his absence. His thoughts and ideas, his heart for teaching and nurturing the growth of others, helping them be their personal best, I think will be felt for generations.

The first thing I remember is when Doug and Rita visited Holland, a long time ago.
I think we visited a church and I was very surprised how he knew so much about history. I remember I thought I wish every child could have a teacher like him.
Later my husband and I moved to Brabant we made a cycle tour which he enjoyed very much. In Eersel we sat for a drink and met “de contente mens” a statue om the market place!
I loved reading all the things you wrote about Doug, I knew he was loved bij everybody and now I read also especially by his students. Lots of love Tante Elly

Rita and Tommy there are no words to describe the void Doug leaves behind. Our families shared so many great memories that I will treasure and know that when I think of them it will make me smile. He definitely left a lasting impression. I know that he treasured and loved both of you so much. He was such a kind person who gave so much of himself to others. I'm going to truly miss him and please know that I am here for both of you.

Doug Wilhelm had a tremendously positive impact on my kids when they were in his class at Hamilton Middle School. The highlight, of course, was Evening of Eminence, but the entire year was meaningful for them. I was lucky enough to get to be friends with Doug, Rita, and Tommy around that time, and, Rita and Tommy, I wanted you to know how sad Chris, Will, Sofia, and I are for your loss. We are sending you and the rest of your family lots of love.
