Laurel Engels Obituary

ENGELS, LAUREL RAE Social worker, 70 Laurel R. Engels, loving mother of Letitia (Paul) Sullivan, Jennifer (John) Diddio, Forrest (Patti) and Lawrence. Beloved grandmother of Patrick, Heather, Ryan, Brendan, Becky, Vincent, Josh, Christina, Zach and Jeff; also great-grandmother to Tyler, Trevor and Courtney; cherished sister of Antoinette (Harold) Richard, Ralph J. (Jeanne) Jordan, Jr, David (Terrie Allison) Jordan; also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and her favorite aunt, Elizabeth Baldwin. She was a mentor to dozens of children who were entrusted to her care. Mrs. Engles was born August 30, 1931 in Denver and passed away July 18, 2002 in Bremerton, Washington after a two-year battle with cancer. A life-long civic and political activist, she served as a board member and chairperson of the Berkley Water and Sanitation District for many years; a member and officer of the Adams County and Colorado Democratic Parties, past president of the Adams County and Colorado Jane Jefferson Clubs and was involved in numerous other organizations. She had been an office and social worker and was a tireless volunteer for a number of causes, political candidates and an advocate for children, the mentally ill and the aged. She operated a daycare center in Adams County for many years. After retirement, Mrs. Engels moved to her home on Puget Sound in 1998. Her family and a legion of friends will profoundly miss her. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Monday, July 29, 2002, 11:30 a.m., at the Archdiocese of Denver Mortuary. Interment, Mount Olivet Cemetery.
