Afton Jensen Obituary

Afton Sjoberg Jensen 1918 ~ 2008 ST. GEORGE, UTAH- A prayer has been answered and a honorable life has been fulfilled on the afternoon of Sunday, June 1, 2008. Afton passed away peacefully from this mortal existence and entered into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father. She was born October 25, 1918, to Fredia Hodell and Nils Peter Anderson. Upon the death of her birth mother, her father consented for adoption to Augusta Berquist and Gustave E. Sjoberg. Afton came from a very musical family. She took piano lessons at the age of eight. At age 14 she took vocal lessons and continued singing throughout her high school years. She performed in High School operas and was chosen a lead in the "Honor Play" under the direction of Emma Rae McKay. She was chosen to sing a solo at Granite High graduation exercises in 1936. Afton graduated with a degree in cosmetology and was on the "Ways and Means Committee of Cosmetologist State Board" for two years. She sang with a group called the "Chanson Singers" for 20 years. Afton modeled at LaRae's clothing in Salt Lake City for four years and was chosen out of 25 women in 1964, for the Mrs. America Contest. She married Clyde B. Jensen, November 5, 1938, which was later solemnized on March 6, 1940, in the Salt Lake Temple. Afton was active in the LDS Church and served as Librarian, Young Women's, Primary and Relief Society Chorister, Secretary of the Sunday School, Visiting Teacher and was an active choir member. In 1984, Clyde and Afton retired and moved to St. George. Together they served an LDS Historical Visitor Mission in St. George from 1991-1992, and ordinance workers in the St. George Temple for 15 years. Afton had a steadfast testimony of the gospel and love for her husband (66 years) and family. She is survived by her three children, DeVar Jensen, Claudia Rock Kreipl, and Colleen Vaughn, 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grand-children. Her legacy of faith, love and service will continue to bless her posterity forever. We will miss her sweet presence, but rejoice knowing she has met her Savior and is now reunited with her beloved companion, Clyde. Her family will remember her forever as stated in a poem. There is beauty of the form There is beauty in the face There is beauty in sweet music There is beauty in behavior And there is beauty in a smile Funeral services will be held Fri., June 6, 2008, 2 p.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff St. Viewings will be held Thurs., June 5, 2008, from 6-7 p.m. and again Friday, one hour prior to services, both at the Mortuary. Graveside services will be held Sat., June 7, 2008, 2 p.m. Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 S. Highland Dr., Salt Lake City, Utah. I miss Clyde, and now I will miss Afton. I grew up with the Jensen family and have such fond memories from early childhood, including waterskiing at Bear Lake. I remember Afton's beauty parlor in the basement (and the dog) and Afton's laugh. My Dad called Clyde "Elk." Most memorable are Clyde and Afton hosting my wedding reception in their home in 1975 and in 1998 Clyde working day and night on my condo, painting and wallpapering and everything else to meet the 5-day deadline. He slept on the floor and ate donuts and fast food. I think of him every day. I miss them both. Barbara Evenson Haugsoen

Dear Jensen Family, I had the opportunity to work with your dad at State Farm. They were such a great example to me of how to treat your companion. Afton was always so kind to everyone. When I think of her the word that comes to me is elegant. Her life was a life well lived
