Keith Boyer Obituary

Keith Edward Boyer A long time resident of Castro Valley Died on June 29, 2009, with his family by his side, after a truly heroic 8-year battle with cancer. He was born in Hamilton, Missouri on March 30, 1937. His family moved to Oakland in 1948, and then to San Leandro, where he attended public schools, graduating from San Leandro High School in 1955. He was awarded a Lifetime Teaching Certificate from the University of California. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy and completed other studies at Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal-Poly Pomona and the University of Virginia. Boyer taught many courses at the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Academy, under the auspices of Chabot College. In 1962 Keith became a member of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. He spent the next 29 years in that service, rising through the ranks from Deputy Sheriff to Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and retiring as Division Commander. His career with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office afforded him the honor of serving under 5 Sheriffs of the County (Jack Gleason, Frank Madigan, Tom Houchins, Glenn Dyer and Charles Plummer). Boyer's primary assignments were in Patrol and Investigative Services where he participated in many and diverse investigations, including the Chowchilla kidnapping, the arrest and conviction of a City Councilman for receiving stolen property, the Edmund Kemper serial murders and other homicides. At various times he was the Chief Deputy Coroner, Commander of County-wide Services, Commander of the Criminal Division, Captain of Patrol and Investigations, Captain of Glenn Dyer Jail, Captain of Santa Rita Jail, Lieutenant of Investigations and Commanding Officer of the SWAT Team, Bomb Squad, Internal Affairs, Crime Prevention and other assignments. He retired in 1991. Keith was a member of The Boy Scouts of America (including membership in its honor society, The Order of the Arrow), Past Master of Lakeshore Masonic Lodge #551 (now Castro Valley Lodge) and President of the Aahmes Shrine Peace Officers' Club. He was recognized as Citizen of the Year in Castro Valley in 1989 by the Castro Valley Toastmasters Club. He also received recognition for his services to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office on 2 occasions by the California State Assembly, and as Outstanding Citizen by the U.S. House of Representatives. He was a member of the Bay Counties Peace Officers' Association, E Clampus Vitus and ACGOB (Alameda County Good Old Boys). He served on the Alameda County Grand Jury for four terms, three of which were as Foreman, and was a member of the HARD Foundation. He served on the Board of Directors of Meals on Wheels in Hayward as well as preparing and delivering meals for that organization. He was a member of the Alameda County 100 Club, and was serving his 2nd term as a Director on the Alameda County Fair Board at the time of his death. Keith adored his family and is survived by his wife of 16 years, Donna Boyer, 2 children: Mike Boyer (wife, Donna) of Castro Valley; Shari Boyer (partner, Charlie Margiotta) of Pleasanton and 2 step-children: Traci Carter (partner, Kelly Miles) of Brentwood and Justin Buckhanan of Tracy. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, upon whom he has lavished much love and attention: Adam and Samantha Zentner; Grant Boyer; Derrick and Anthony Buckhanan; Jacob Carter; Savannah, Samantha and Joshua Miles and Victoria Gebelein. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Boyer (wife, Gay); sister, Sharon Martinez; sister, Loretta McCormack (husband, Jason); and brother, Stephen Michael Boyer, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2009, 11:00 a.m., at the Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services, 4985 Broder Boulevard, Dublin (one block from Santa Rita Jail), with reception to follow at La Bella Italia Restaurant, 15015 East 14th Street, San Leandro. Keith requested that donations be made to either Meals on Wheels, 1435 Grove Way, Hayward, CA 94546, or the American Cancer Society, 1710 Webster Street, Oakland, CA 94612.

12 years...long time. I think about you sometimes, remembering you, (in frustration), saying to me: "It's simple. Stop and ask yourself: WWKD? What Would Keith Do?" Indeed. Surprisingly, I'm still doing it...miss you.

Donna and Family:
I'm ashamed to say that I've been out of the loop for awhile, and didn't know when Keith left us. What a loss..many years ago, he attached himself to a young Deputy (for no reason I can understand), and over the years provided help, guidance, and occasional gentle nudging with a boot. His professional contributions are known by most; his personal ones less so except by a lucky few. Honest, straightforward (read, blunt;) and a man who led from the front..a dedicated man I truly respected and one I would have followed into fire. I'm sorry for your loss; and ours..

This is to the etire Boyer family. My husband Fred and I are very sad to find out about Keith's passing in this manner. He played a big role in helping us when Deputy Blancher died IN THE LINE OF DUTY. I met Donna when I worked for the Sheriff's Department, and she and her daughter Traci were always kind , and fun to be with. It is with much sadness that I tell you that Keith was wonderful, and the only good thing is that he is in Heaven . Pam Biscotti and Fred Biscotti

When we lost our father Mike Milligan, Keith became the Patriarch of the Milligan clan.
We all loved him so. He was so much more than a cousin to us, he was our big brother and I will miss our calls. To Donna, Mike, Sharon, and all of you, the miles may separate us, but our love for all of you keeps us close. We are here for you whenever you need us. May God bless you and keep you close to His heart.

"Grandpa Boyer" is someone that touched my heart in more ways than one. His kind heart, warm smile and his open arms always made me think of him as family. He has always been a supportive person in my life with my career choices, my drive to finish school and has taught me to reach for the stars. Even though he is in a much better place now, he will always be on my mind and in my heart. I WILL MISS YOU GRANDPA.

Brother Keith was a Freemason who loved the craft and particpated with his lodge brethren in fellowship and ritual. Rising to the rank of Master of a lodge, as Brother Keith did, demands many skills of an individual. These are skills that Brother Keith possessed. All our love and support goes out to Donna, Mike, and all Keith's family. You are all in our prayers and we pray that God helps relieve the sorrow that fills your heart. It's hard to lose someone whether it's expected or not. Keith was an amazing cousin and will be missed; and my only regret is that the miles between us didn't allow us to know each other as well as we could have. However, even with the miles that separated us, we are family and you all will be in our hearts forever. All our love and sympathy, Laura & Roger Dunning

Keith,

I will truly miss you. Your values, teachings and dedication will remain with me and will be used on a daily basis the rest of my life. You allowed myself and others to grow, not only as employees but as adults. Your style of openness and caring allowed for free and easy communication which came back to you as dedicated individuals and friends.

Lastly my "Brother" "Rest in Peace" Our earthly loss is heavens gain. Tonight I will hoist one in your honor.

Mike Boyer

July 5, 2009

He fought cancer like a Spartan fighting the Persians. He loved his family and friends and fun. One of the truly great backyard farmers of Castro Valley and a kind hearted father whom I will miss very much. One of the last of the "Law Dogs" he would have been just as at home roaming the streets of Dodge City and getting rid of the bad guys there as he was in his career with the Sheriff's Department.

The dougnut shop will not be the same without you.

Your son,
Mike

I will truely miss "Grandpa Boyer". You were a wonderful and strong person . You always supported me in my Law Enforcement career- and I thank you for that . At times it was too difficult to call, but I never stop thinking about you . If anything this has taught me that life is short and not to put things off and to call people when you are thinking of them. I know you are in a better place now and you will always be in my heart.
