Joe Chacon Obituary

JOE C. CHACON, decorated military veteran, retired police officer, and a loving husband, father, uncle, and "Tata," passed away on June 19, 2010. He remains eternal in our thoughts and his legacy. Joe is remembered for his intelligence, service to his country and his community, strength and creativity. Born in Stanton, Texas, he grew up in Fabens and lived in El Paso throughout his adult life. A devout Catholic, in his lifetime he constructed three grottoes dedicated to St. Jude, his patron saint. He loved learning and was self-taught in every aspect of building, from foundations to woodworking. Joe served with distinction from 1950-52 in the Korean Conflict, earning numerous medals and awards, including the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star and the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan). In 1960, he joined the El Paso Police Department, rising to the rank of Sergeant in 1972. He retired from the force in 1980. Joe also contributed to the community through his involvement in numerous political campaigns, and volunteer service with the United Way of El Paso County, and the Aliviane NO-AD Board of Directors. He also served as Democratic Party Precinct Judge of Precinct 139 in Ysleta. He was preceded in death by his son Steven Patrick, his parents Anselmo and Elvira Chacon, and brothers Bernardo and Domingo Chacon. Joe is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judge Alicia R. Chacon, and his children Jane Chacon, Lorenzo Chacon, Joe Chacon, Jr., Carlos D. Chacon, Corinne Chacon, and Samuel R. Chacon; brother-in-law Carlos Rosencrans and sister-in-law Jovita, Raul Rosencrans and sister-in-law Lourdes; and brother-in-law Joe E. Torres and sister-in-law Esther Rosencrans. He is survived by 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends to whom he was always a source of counsel and laughter. Those who were blessed to know him are thankful to God for the gift of his life. So I will bless you all of my life, in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul shall be filled as with a banquet, my mouth shall praise you with joy. You have been my help; in the shadow of your wings I rejoice. My soul clings to you; your right hand holds me fast. June 23, 2010

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

We forward our condolences to the Chacon family, his wife and children. I had the pleasure of working for Sgt. Chacon during our tenure with the El Paso Police Department. He was a fair and just supervisor - recognizing that the "street" cop was such an important facet of law enforcement. Our thoughts and prayers for him and his family during these times. May God Bless you and grant you peace.
