Andy Hernandez was one of the first community leaders I met in 1982 when I came from LA to work at KSEE 24. I found him a thoughtful, honest man who cared deeply about the education of underprivileged children. RIP Andy and all our blessings to his family.

Mary and Christina, the gift of memory will always fill your hearts. I will never forget how much he cherished his family. He made all of us in Head Start feel as if we were part of his family too. His passion and dedication will never be forgotten. God bless you. Rachel Martinez Head Start

To my father,
You will be missed dearly. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't think of you because you are always with us. I can still hear your voice, telling me what I should and shouldn't do in my life. I want to thank you for holding on as long as you did and waited for my return home. Those last two hours together was most memorable to me as I told you everything on how I feel and then you peacefully drifted away. Not many children can say they are at peace with losing a parent but I was lucky. I have no regrets with our time together because we both did everything we could and wanted. I know you are looking down at me with your judge mental self but it seems as though you never left which can explain why I can not cry. I gave you a promise before you left and I will continue to keep that promise till the day we both leave this earth and reunite with you. I hope and pray to see you and Lily again. I know you both are having the time of your lives up there.
Thank you for giving me the knowledge, strength, and love everyday as I will do the same with my children and keep you proud!
Always smiling at me,
I love you dearly,
Your daughter ,
Christina

Mary and Christina, please know we are thinking of you. Andrew and I were late in finding each other. Yet, he was not only my cousin and collaborator, he was one of my dearest friends. I am a better person because of his influence.
We, as you know, would spend hours on the phone. We would discuss our favorite topic life: joy and sadness, love and loss. The stories of the lives of those we love and loved. He told me of his travels when he was in the service and his experiences in education.
We spoke of family and it's importance; the most important: his never ending love for both of you. His fight to stay as long as he could with you and Christina. To be here to love you both as long as he could. He loved life, even the frustrations and challenges. But, his desire to be able to love both of you was his motivation for all he did in his life.
He told me of his desire to publish his genealogy. I will continue to work toward the completion of his goal.
I wish I could be there with you both in this time of sorrow. But, know I am here (a phone call away).
May the pain of your loss be soothed by the knowledge that his love for you will always exist. May the Lord bless you and keep you within his embrace.
We will continue to keep Andy in our stories and thoughts. As we discuss him this day he is alive by way of our remembrance.
