Alice Sousa Obituary

Alice Sousa died peacefully on January 29, 2024 at the age of 90. Her life was defined by a commitment to the social justice teachings of her Catholic faith and love for her family. She and her husband Dick were active in Catholic youth ministry through the Search Program, and in their retirement became secular Franciscans. In 1983 with her neighbor Louise Weske, Alice co-founded The Lord's Table, now part of St. Joseph's Family Center, to serve the food insecure of Gilroy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Sousa, her children, Geralyn Fortino and Jamie Sousa, her granddaughter Dalilah Sousa, and siblings Frances, John and Jim. She looked forward to being reunited with them and her dear friend, Fr. Tom Seagrave.
Alice will be missed by many, especially her surviving children: Richard, Marianne, James, Ted, and Sumi; her grandchildren: Josh, Marikah, Nick, Daniel, Adam, Miles, Mitchell, Dustin, and Angelina; her 15 great grandchildren; her brothers Donald and Albert, and her sisters-in-law Barbara and Heather.
Her funeral mass is February 12, 2024, 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Gilroy. Reception following at the Gilroy Veterans Memorial Building.

I was so very sorry to see that Alice passed away. I have always admired your Mom and Dad. I remember thinking, as far back as when I was in High School, what a unique family. My Dad had your mom paint portraits of my sister and I . For about three weeks, almost every day, I sat and your mom did her thing. They hung on our walls for many years. My mom loved those paintings. I seriously adored the time I spent there. I loved the house and just the hustle and bustle of all the kids coming home after school. I always just thought it was ver cool, I secretly wanted to be adopted..
I would see your mom around town as I grew up. Always got a kick out of honking at her when she was dressed in black and sitting silently on the corner of St. Mary´s! She would always smile and wave. Fast forward, you cannot imagine how happy I was when she moved in at Merrill Gardens. My dad, was also a resident there, Merrill Gardens became my home away from home. Always excited when I shared the elevator with her and her dog, the name escapes me, but she only had three legs and she loved that dog, along with a lot of the residents!! Unfortunately, Covid hit, and we brought my dad home. I never really got a chance to go back and visit. I thought of your Mom many times and was very saddened that I missed her service. I am truly sorry for that..my heart will always remember her. RIP, my friend! I know your happy in heaven..My heart is will you all. Much LOVE

Alice was/is my mother-in-law. She was so positive, supportive and so great with my husband. She helped him with his grief after his father passed. On his day off, Ted enjoyed long Sunday visits with her. He liked to help her with projects and to do lists that she needed help with. She always had a project for Ted. That is one way they visited with each other. Alice knew/appreciated that Ted was not a conversationalist. Ted enjoyed countless dinners with Alice and her little group of friends at Merrill Gardens. After her memory condition became much worse they both found a new way to communicate with each other. It was a communication style that brought smiles to their faces, and joy to their hearts. She gave me a wonderful man and husband. Even in his adult years, she gave him so much good until her last day. I so appreciate that. He simply adores her. Her memory will be treasured and cherished by us. #momlove

Our agency has forever been touched by the giving spirit and compassion of Alice Sousa.

Alice had the courage to start our meal program, The Lord's Table, more than 40 years ago. This program eventually came under the auspices of St. Joseph's Family Center, and still continues to impact the lives of those experiencing homelessness or are unhoused.

Her legacy of giving, caring for those less fortunate and unwavering support of our work in South County will forever be remembered.

Rest in peace, and may your light continue to shine from the heavens!
