VALTMAN, Edmund S. Edmund S. Valtman, 90, a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, died Wednesday, (January 12, 2005) in Bloomfield where he had made his home the past 40 years. He was the husband of the late Helmi (Grunberg) Valtman. Born in Estonia, he was the son of the late Juhan and Elisabeth (Kukk) Valtman, immigrating to this country in 1949. He came to Hartford in 1951. His first cartoon was printed in a children's magazine when he was 15 years old. Valtman believed cartoons, beside being editorial expressions were works of art. Mr. Valtman worked as an editorial cartoonist for the former Hartford Times Newspaper and as an independent artist. He was a founding member of American Editorial Cartoonist, a member of the Society of Cartoonist, the West Hartford Art League, the Canton Artist's Guild, the Connecticut Estonian Society, and the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church in CT, Inc. He is survived by his nieces, Lillian Shoebridge of Toronto, Canada, Kai McInnes of Mansfield, Ontario; and many close friends and colleagues. A memorial service will be held February 5, at 12 Noon in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 60 Church St., Manchester. Donations in his memory may be made to the Estonia Relief Committee, Inc., 243 East 34th Street, NY, NY 10016, or the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church, C/O Rev. Hartford is a city of many personalities. While I was at WTIC AM & FM, I enjoyed Mr. Valtman's work. And, yes, his Ella Grasso characterization was something else!
