George Stoll Obituary

Stoll, George James Jr.
Dec. 22, 1920 - June 25, 2007

George James Stoll Jr., 86, Sarasota, formerly of Louisville, Ky., died June 25, 2007.
Services will be private. The family will hold a burial service later. The University of Virginia Medical School handled arrangements.
Survivors include his second wife, Elizabeth; children Marianne S. Gill, James M. and Carolyn S. Bolt, all of Sarasota, and Gail S. Adams of Goodview, Va.; stepdaughters Elizabeth McDermott of Vinton, Va., and Ann Brown of Nebraska; and a sister, Martha S. Ballard of Louisville and Sanibel Island.
Mr. Stoll attended Louisville public schools and valued his years in Boy Scouts of America. He graduated in psychology from Grinnell College, Iowa. In World War II he worked for the government at the University of Iowa as a psychological screener for U.S. service recruits. Following the war, he returned to Louisville, entering the family business, Stoll Oil Refining Company. While studying safety hazards of the oil industry, he devised a unique vehicle for fighting oil fires, educating employees of many oil companies in vital new techniques.
An active member of St. Matthews Volunteer Fire Department in Kentucky, he later created the first volunteer fire department in Sarasota. In 1952, following the death of his wife, he and his four children moved to Sarasota, where he built Holiday Harbor. He married Elizabeth Gibson Vosburgh. Holiday Harbor Seafaring Camp grew into an academic sailing program at sea titled "The Flint School Aboard Te Vega and Te Quest." Mr. Stoll was one of the 10 original founders of "The Field Club."
He was preceded in death by his parents, George J. and Lorena A. Stoll; his brother, Capt. C. W. Stoll; and his wife, Marion Kathryn Pirkey, all of Louisville. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

George Stoll had a tremendous influence on the lives of many. To me he was a breath of fresh ideas as I had just escaped the indoctrination of Canadian socialism. George was remarkable in his ability to make vivid factual points, which will long be remembered. Thank you George & Betty too.

Though I was only 10 years old at the time, I want to thank you for the honor of knowing you and attending The Flint School. I have fond memories of traveling the Mediterranean, looking up and seeing the millions of stars on a sail from Majolica to Malta. Scrubbing the decks, learning how to make a Spanish Mast head and the incredible number of places you and Jim showed us all.
I guess you are now assigned to the “New Beginnings” cabin now. Have a great adventure.
Thank you so much

George, had a greater influence than he could have imagined. Once in a while I find myself quoting him. I still review my Data Cards every so often.

Thank you Captain.

George, old buddy – if you can read this, and I certainly wouldn’t put it past you, we’re going to miss you. You were a tremendous positive influence in a lot of young lives, mine included. I’ve heard that in recent years you felt like you may have failed in your quest. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The only standard by which the Flint School could be considered a failure would be perfection. No, it wasn’t perfect, and neither were you. But you were better than most of us, and better in many ways than anyone else I’ve known, and I’ve known a lot of people in my now 50+ years in this life.

Happy Sailing, George.
